Surviving is the keystone on his life and will do anything to keep himself alive. Even with all that, tho, he's not the best hunter out there as he likes to play solo and with bigger preys, it's not weird at all that he ends up losing control of the situation and getting someone or himself hurt.
With kids.... this is the only warning I'm giving, if your Utah gal is having eggs with this rebel without cause she better drop him and get away with the eggos because if he gets the chance he can and will try to eat the babies. Won't go around playing babysitter. And an easy munch is still munch.
