Before the events of ROTB...
Wheeljack landed on Earth much later than the other Autobots, with Decepticons hot on his tail. He crashed down somewhere in the jungles of Peru, and emerged heavily damaged, having taken numerous blasts from the Decepticons. Running out of ideas, he escaped into the town of Cusco, where he scanned a Volkswagen Type-2 Microbus being used by a man who repaired TVs. He slowly built himself a new body, and when he had created enough weapons, he went out to confront the 'Cons who had shot him down. When he found them, three Seekers and a foot soldier, Wheeljack didn't waste time for introductions. He took out his rifle, activated his cannons and made it rain fire. When he was done, he incinerated the corpses and returned to Cusco, where he laid low, waiting for Optimus Prime's orders.

Post ROTB...
Wheeljack arrived in New York with the others at the end of ROTB. Five years later, after constant pestering from his fellow Autobots, he finally decided to adopt a new vehicle mode, something much more agile and faster. He came across a Mercedes Benz E-Class, and scanned it, seeing the potential it had. Along with upgrading his alt mode to an offroad version, Wheeljack also rebuilt his body to commemorate his old look, though he retained his glasses, and added a lab coat to go with it.
As an inventor, Wheeljack has equipped his vehicle mode with hidden compartments and gadgets, making it more than meets the eye. These modifications grant him an edge in espionage, reconnaissance, and transportation of vital equipment.
Overall, Wheeljack is a brilliant and resourceful Autobot, equally at home on the battlefield and in the laboratory.
