Description I always wanted to do a female warrior inspired by Sikh aesthetics. I have painted several Akali-inspired males in a fantasy setting so I thought my next one should be a female. Luckily everything here just fell into place, the colours, pose, armour and everything. The male ones did not turn out as well as this one, which is why I did not upload them. However, they became a source of ideas and inspiration for me.

Inspired by Akali Snake Charmer piece, the idea came from a painting of one of those male Akalis, in whose background I had drawn a silhouette of an Akali with a really tall turban and armour spikes. So I cropped out the silhouette, enlarged it and started working on it.

This piece was obviously inspired by Akalis but Akali women never dress like this nor are they ever monks. This made it really exciting for me to work on it. I intended to push the fantasy style and context of this piece by adding armour pieces that are clearly unreal. It is not possible to fight in such large turbans either. (Hint: This is a fantasy piece NOT a historical one.)

This was a nice break from my Hari Singh Nalwa painting.

ENJOY!

EDIT: Changed name to Akalini, the female of Akali.

I hope You can do paintings regarding what really is happening in Punjab..

[link]

I really like your work.. we need everyone to know who Punjabis are and what the Culture is about, because all of the people are really dumb down to even care.

Currently focusing on Sikhs, will expand to other punjabis as well. I recently read about Dewan Mohkam Chand and Elahi Baksh of Lahore Durbar.

Regarding the state of Punjab, I am living here now and it is fine. Delhi, where the pogroms happened is also fine. Sikhs are living here happily.

This is all kinds of awesome. Love it! So good to see a woman portrayed as a strong warrior, with the improbable-while-fighting piece being her dastaar and not a bikini made of chainmail.

Again I am so late. But ya improbable while fighing is the theme of my next fews works like these.

That's the idea. These guys have bigass turbans that, in realistic conditions, would make it impossible to fight.

Amazing, I like how she stands out and the others in the background are blurred. Love the fact that, her being a woman warrior is highlighted, you know she's a woman but the expression on her face and the way she's walking is completely warrior like.

Yeah I've noticed that about the dhumala's these days. I seen some programe about the guy who wears the heaviest turban in the world. Saying that, Nihangs from Ranjeet Singh's time still had fairly tall dhumalla and still fought in them.

Nicely painted. I have actually seen seem Gatka girls dressed in a similar fashion (although without the tall turban and spikey armour).

Yep though that is relatively modern; such bana was historically male dress. Also I am enjoying how the dhumalla has evolved in last century. It got so big with heavy decorations. I will be working on some ideas that revolve around such a large dhumalla.

Oh no that is not true. We have paintings of Nihangs during Maharaja Ranjit Singh's time. The turbans are very small compared to the large turbans that some Nihangs wear.

They were not as big as some we see today, but I've seen some pictures where they are thin but still fairly tall (big enough to hold a Chakra or two).

A lot of those links didn't work for some reason.
I like the second one, will definitely use that for the decorations. Similar designs perhaps. I am not sure why I didn't consult that image in the first place.

Fortress sounds a lot more powerful than tower even though Dastaar Boonga means turban tower. Hmm maybe this skinny one could be called a tower, and those big thick ones could be called a fortress...
