Max's POV
A sharp knock at the door seized my attention. I placed my book on the table and grasped the handle. I gasped, a little shocked, when I saw Zephyr standing outside in the pouring rain. He was completely soaked to the bone and dressed all in black.
"What are you doing here?" I asked. For once he was not smiling but looking rather grim.
"I have to talk to you." He said simply.
"Okay?" I wondered. "Come in." I told him as I opened the door further.
"Is there a place we can talk in secret?" Zephyr asked warily.
"Um, sure." I replied my curiosity very evident now. Zephyr followed me soundlessly to my bedroom I shared with Ella.
"Hey Ella." I called as I walked in the door. "Mind if we steal the bedroom for a while?"
"Sure." Ella said as she shot me a suspicious glance. I shrugged, figuring I would just tell her whatever Zephyr wanted to tell me later.
Ella left the room quickly and I shut the door tightly behind her then turned to Zephyr. He was sitting on the floor, his hands in his lap, looking completely miserable. Water dripped off his clothes and onto the floor, creating a small puddle beneath him.
"So, what is it?" I asked him when he didn't speak. He lifted his head a fraction of an inch and I could see the tears brimming in his eyes.
"It's Star…" he whispered. "They want to kill her…" and with those seven words tears overflowed from his eyes and onto his hands.
"Who wants to kill her?" I asked, feeling as though somebody had just knocked the breath from me.
"Them! The white coats!" he whimpered.
"How do you know this?" I probed, trying to convince myself he was lying. Star wasn't exactly my favorite person in the world but she was Fang's twin and the kids absolutely loved her.
"They're shutting down the labs, all of them. Ever since you destroyed the main headquarters of Intex nothing has been working properly so they decided to shut down the labs." Zephyr informed me. As I opened my mouth to say something Zephyr cut me off, continuing in his dead voice.
"I was one of those experiments who had survived through birth. They considered me a success, the third one. They put me in modeling business to see if I could blend in with the human race properly. Once I had shown I could they gave me a house and some cash then ditched me.
They were right about to close when they became aware of one experiment they had forgotten about; Star. So they kidnapped her. Soon after they deemed she was too unstable to live among humans and erased her memory so they could kill her. Somehow she escaped and ran back to you guys. That was when they turned to me.
It was decided to would find her. They told me where she was and said that if I could show she could live in the human world they would let her stay with me. I tried everything I could but they still say she's unstable. They told me their coming in three days to take her away!" He stopped to draw in a shuddery breath. Tears were flowing freely down his face as he tried to catch his breath. "You have to help me Max! You have to! They're going to kill her!" Zephyr looked up at me, his eyes begging.
I looked at Zephyr in complete shock, my mind reeling. What he was saying couldn't be true yet everything he said made sense.
"What can I do?" I asked helplessly. I didn't know what to do against the white coats. I had fought them for years but now everything was different; I was pregnant, Angel had just barely turned back into her sweet self, and I couldn't stand to lose anyone.
"I…I don't know…" Zephyr sighed. His shoulders slumped in defeat and his head fell to his hands. I watched in horror as he sat there, crying.
As many know I have never been good at emotional things but he looked so defeated, so crushed, that it would have been criminal to not comfort him. Very awkwardly I walked over to him and placed an arm around his shaking shoulders.
"I'm sorry Zephyr." I whispered regretfully.
"It's not your fault." He managed to choke out. I swallowed hard as I realized it was my fault.
"I'm so sorry…" I whispered one more time before we lapsed back into silence.
"I should go now." Zephyr suggested as he took a deep breath.
"You can stay the night." I advised. Zephyr just shook his head.
"I am not leaving Star alone for that long." Zephyr told me, his eyes shining with unshed tears. "I'm going to make every moment count."
I nodded in understanding and gave him a watery smile which he tried to return but failed.
"Goodbye." I said as opened the door for him.
"Bye…" he murmured.
"Wait," I exclaimed, suddenly remembering something. "You said you were a DNA recombination. What are you?"
Zephyr looked up in surprise, his read eyes gleaming. "Can't you guess?" he whispered. "97% human 3% vampire bat…" he said sadly. " With a taste for her blood." He added without saying who the she is. As I opened my mouth to ask he disappeared into the shadows that surrounded the porch.
I took a deep breath and walked back inside. My heart saddened by the news of Star's death.

Iggy's POV
I stared blankly at the door before me. I was inside the closet in the room Max and Ella shared. Before Max had come in I had been hiding so I could scare Ella when she opened the door but Max had walked in before that had happened. I was going to leave then but I stayed just so I could make sure Max wasn't cheating on Fang. Now I wished I could have left then.
I felt as though someone had torn my heart out, threw it on the ground, and stomped on it. Star was going to die. My mind couldn't wrap around that simple thing. I could see Zephyr's wild eyes every time I closed mine. I wished I could seek someone out who can comfort me but I had just heard from Max that there would be no help coming from here.
I closed my eyes and let myself slip away as tears streaked down my face. I remembered the last time I had cried, feeling so much pain. It was when Dylan had just killed Star and I had beaten him up. That time I thought Star was dead for sure but she hadn't since I had healy hands then but now…now I knew that the white coats had set their eyes on Star and there was nothing I could do to save her.
Suddenly I wondered why I had ever cared about Ella. She was shallow and fun but she wasn't anything like Star. Star was sweet yet fierce, someone who would just as soon love a kitten to death as she would kick an Erasers lungs in. She had wild mood swings but was never mean to anyone she loved. I felt a sharp pang of envy for Zephyr. He was going to be there for Star in her last days and I wasn't.
I wondered if he would even tell her. Probably not, I thought. I decided I would tell her, as much as she would hate me for it I couldn't let her go on not knowing. If I was going to die I would want someone to tell me so I could go down fighting.
I automatically took a deep breath to try to steady myself and get a hold of all the emotions rushing through my body at once. A door opened and I could hear footsteps outside the closet door, then Ella's voice. I took another deep breath as I realized I had to break up with Ella. Well now is as good of a time as ever, I thought to myself as I opened the closet door.
As I had expected Ella screamed. It was quite deafening and I felt another pang of longing for Star and her quietness. I help out my hands and took a step towards her.
"Iggy, it's you!" Ella chirped in a falsely bright voice.
"Ella, we need to talk." I told her gravely.
