Iggy’s POV

I had found it, I had actually managed to find Zephyr’s house in this mess of a city. It had taken all day but after finding out that he was a model it was easy. He had a freaking mansion in the middle of freaking nowhere, three miles outside of town. Damn rich people.

Taking a deep breath I knocked on the door. A minute passed, then two, and then, voilà, the door opened!

“Star,” I breathed, recognizing her footsteps.

“Iggy?” she asked in shock. “What are you doing here?”

“Star, I’m so sorry!” I apologized. “I feel like a jerk and I am sorry! I knew I hurt you and…” my voice trailed off. “I’m sorry…” I looked down at the ground, expecting her to slap me, that’s what Ella would have done, but nothing happened.

“Who’s there?” a voice from inside the house called. Zephyr.

I shook my head, hoping she would get the message.

“Um, just some guy selling something,” Star lied quickly. “I’ll be there in a minute.”

“I need to talk to you,” I said in a low hush.

“I don’t know if now is a good time,” She said nervously.

“Please?” I asked, begging her. She hesitated for a moment, and then pulled the door shut softly, stepping out onto the porch with me.

“What is it?” she asked.

“The other day Zephyr came over,” I started.

“Why?” she cut me off.

“Apparently all the schools are closing.” I could hear the first sounds of a word emerging from her. I held a finger up to stop her. “They are letting all the experiments that can function in society properly free. The gang, Zephyr, and some of the Erasers are free. But…” I trailed off, not knowing where to go from there.

“What is it?” Star asked, noticing the catch.

I took a deep breath and grabbed her shoulders. She flinched slightly but didn’t move away.

“You are to be terminated.”

Star was shocked into silence. She gasped, her shoulders rising.

“What?” she asked, half sobbing.

“They’re going to kill you. In two days they are coming.” I told her. I fought the urge to pull her to my chest. The soft sound of her tears filled the air between us.

“Does Zephyr know about this?” she asked.

I looked down, not wanting to be the one to tell her this. “He’s the one who told Max. He knew all along.”

The door suddenly opened. I looked up in shock. It had to be Zephyr.

“Iggy?!”

Star’s POV

I stared up at Zephyr, my face still wet with tears. He took one look at Iggy and me and his eyes darkened.

“What the Hell did you do to her?” Zephyr yelled at Iggy.

He grabbed Iggy and yanked him away from me. My shoulders felt bare without the warmth of Iggy’s hands on them.

“What did you do to her?” Zephyr asked again, throwing a punch at Iggy. Reality snapped into place and I realized that this was the person who had hid my own death sentence from me. The person who was going to hand me over to the whitecoats without even giving me a fighting chance.

“You bastard!” I screamed. Zephyr turned around, shocked.

“Wha-“

“Why didn’t you tell me that they were going to kill me?” I demanded. “Why didn’t you tell me? It’s my death! I have the right to know about it!”

His face turned from confusion to understanding. He turned back to Iggy.

“You idiot!” He yelled at him. “You told her!”

“Well you weren’t!” Iggy yelled back at him. He jerked himself free of Zephyr’s grasp.

Zephyr turned to me, his eyes pleading. “I was going to tell you. I was,” he started.

“Then why didn’t you!” I daunted him, pissed off to all hell. “They are coming to kill me in two days. Two damn days and I’m going to be dead!”

“Flower……” he whispered helplessly.

“Don’t,” I said as he tried to hug me. “And my names Star.” I turned and ran. If I was going to die in two days I was going down with a fight.

Zephyr POV

“You idiot!” I turned on Iggy. “Why the Hell did you have to go do that for?”

“I had to tell her!” Iggy yelled back. “What else was I supposed to do, let her die?”

I sighed. “She had to believe that nothing was wrong,” I pinched the bridge of my nose.

“Why?” Iggy demanded, sounding a lot like Star.

“Because, I was going to fake her death and go into hiding. Once the school gave up and shut down then she would be able to come out again but now…”

I peeked a glance at Iggy’s horrified face. I laughed, cruel I know, but I just had to.

“You know what? You have just signed Star’s death warrant. They are going to be all over her now.”

“No….”

Star POV

I stormed around the city, pissed at Zephyr. How dare that bastard hide that from me? I was the one dying, not him!

I could feel the kindness Iggy had nurtured within me slowly die away, little by little, consumed by my hate.

“Damn bloodsucker,” I muttered darkly.

I whirled around and punched the wall. Bits of blood and gore were dragged from my knuckles. I stared at my hand, not feeling the pain, then punched the wall again. Several more times I attacked the defenseless wall before turning on my heels and stalking off to haunt a new place.

I knew that I should be hiding but the only thing I could do was rage through the back alleys. My hate was the only thing that kept me going. I knew that if I were to stop and think about the situation I would be scared shitless. So instead I clung to my hate and muttered curses underneath my breath.

Surprisingly there was no one else in the back alleys. Usually there was at least some stoners or homeless folks wandering around or slumped in shadowed corners but there was no one. This raised an alarm, but I couldn’t calm down enough to think about it clearly.

I turned into an alley that stood darker than the others. A sudden feeling of dread grabbed me. I knew I should turn back around, go back the other direction, but, even though a warning alarm was ringing through my system, I was feeling incredibly reckless.

Taking a deep breath I plowed on through the darkness. When I got to the end of the alley I laughed, mocking the shadows that had frightened me.

A hand wound its way around my mouth, cutting off my laughter, which had turned to a scream. I thrashed wildly, trying to break free, but several other hands had grabbed me. I sunk my teeth into the hand that held me. It recoiled. I drew in air to scream…

A cloth was slapped over my mouth. A foul gas filled my lungs. My sight grew fuzzy. I could feel my eyes rolling into my head as the fight spirited away from me.

A voice that haunted my darkness memories swan towards me through my ocean of black, “Goodnight Satan.”
