Description
The next morning Joey stared at his desk, silent. Kaiba wasn't at school yet, which was odd for the CEO. Joey hoped it wasn't because of him.Â
A minute before the bell rang the CEO swept in. He sat down at his desk without a word to anyone. Joey looked away as Kaiba's eyes flickered in his direction, not wanting to see what emotions hid in those blue depths.Â
Kaiba voted not to say anything to Joey either. It was just too awkward. He felt bad about running away last night, but he didn't know what to do about it. He knew he should apologize, but how?
Class started. This time Joey watched the teacher the whole time and took careful notes. Jou looked over at her brother, wondering what was wrong, Joey never took notes.Â
At lunch Joey was the first to leave. Kaiba wanted to chase after him, but that would just make him seem desperate, even if it was true...
Joey climbed up to the roof and sat on the edge, staring out over the town. There was no breeze today but it was cool enough to enjoy. He wondered what Kaiba was doing. He sighed and looked at the bundle next to him, Kaiba's jacket. Kaiba had forgotten to take when he ran off and now Joey was stuck with it. He wanted to give it back but didn't want to approach Kaiba. The CEO probably hated him by now. So instead he looked out and watched the world go by, trying to forget himself.Â
Kaiba wondered where Joey could have ran off to. He at least wanted to apologize. He asked Jou if she knew where Joey was but she didn't know. The only place he could think of that Joey might have gone was the roof. He climbed the stairs and gently pushed the door open. He was right, Joey sat on the roof, looking dejected.Â
"Hey," Kaiba said.Â
Joey turned around, the sad expression in his eyes turning to shock. "Seto!" he exclaimed. "What are you doing here?"Â
"I wanted to apologize," Kaiba said, shrugging.Â
"You don't have to," Joey said. "I get that you don't want to hang around me anymore."Â
"No, no, it's not that!" Kaiba said. "How did you even get an idea like that?"
"I don't know," Joey shrugged as Kaiba sat down next to him. "Maybe with you running off and every thing it might have popped into my head."Â
Kaiba grimaced. "Yeah, sorry about that."Â
"It's alright, worse has happened."Â
They sat in silence for a few. Neither of them knew what to say. Joey looked at Kaiba then away, his eyes landing on the jacket.Â
"Oh Seto," Joey said. "You forgot this," he threw the jacket at Kaiba.Â
"Nay," Kaiba said. "Kepp it, as a gift for saving my ass yesterday." he tossed the jacket back at Joey, then had to grab Joey when the pup nearly fell trying to catch it.Â
"How can you be such a brilliant fighter, yet have no balance?" Kaiba laughed.Â
Joey turned red. "Be quiet," he mumbled, clutching the jacket to his chest.Â
"Silly pup," Kaiba patted the blonde's head.Â
"Rawr," Joey bared his teeth viciously.Â
"Bad dog," kaiba scolded and whacked Joey on the nose. Joey blinked several times, going cross eyed as he stared at his abused nose.Â
"What was that for?" he complained.Â
"I wanted to," Kaiba smirked. Joey scowled, in sulking mode.Â
"You're mean," he declared.Â
"Yeah, yeah, and your a whiny pup," Kaiba shot back playfully.Â
"Hey Seto?" Joey asked.Â
"Yeah?"
"Would you like to go to a carnival tonight with me and my sis?"
"What's a carnival?" Kaiba asked, perplexed.Â
"An American festival."Â Joey said, rolling his eyes slightly at the idea.
"Oh, okay," Kaiba agreed.Â
"And Seto," Joey prompted again.Â
"Yeah?"
"Thanks for not hating me."Â
Kaiba looked away as blush colored his cheeks. "No problem."Â
That night Kaiba stood in front of the 'carnival', waiting for Joey and Jou.Â
"We have arrived." the twins announced as they jumped out from behind Kaiba.Â
"Ack," Kaiba jumped. "Don't do that!"Â
"Sorry, Seto," Joey apologized. His sister just smirked.Â
"Who's she?" Kaiba asked, noticing a third girl.Â
"My sisters new girlfriend, Serenity." Joey said. Kaiba shot Joey a look. "Yeah, she's lez," Joey answered 'the look.'
Kaiba nodded slowly and wondered if one of their parents were gay at all.Â
"Well then, we'll see you later," Jou said as she snagged Serenity and ran off. "Don't have too much fun!"Â
"Shut up," Joey yelled after her, turning red. Kaiba cleared his throat, trying to expel the blood flow in his cheeks as well.Â
"Sorry about that," Joey said. "She keeps trying to set me up with you even though, you know, your just a friend."
"That's alright," Kaiba shrugged, not knowing whether to be relieved or crushed that he had been called 'just a friend'.Â
"What do you want to do first?" Joey asked.Â
"I have no idea what's going on here," Kaiba confessed. "It looks like toy box got sick."Â
Joey laughed. "Alright, then I'll be your tour guide, I guess,"Â
Kaiba nodded in agreement and followed Joey through the crowds.Â
"Have you ever played a carnival game?" Joey asked. Kaiba shook his head. "Then watch this."
Joey stopped in front of a booth. Milk cans were stacked up and a pile of baseballs stood in front of each stack.Â
"One round please," Joey asked, handing the man three dollars.Â
"Here ya go," the man passed Joey three baseballs in return. "Just knock all the cans down and you get your choice in a prize."
Joey took aim and threw. The ball went wide, not even coming close to the cans.Â
"Ha," Kaiba laughed. "You're never going to knock them down."Â
Joey just smirked and threw again. This time the ball hit the cans in the center, sending them all toppling.Â
"Wow," the man said. "Um, what do you want?"
"Take that Kaiba," Joey taunted. Kaiba rolled his eyes as if it wasn't a big deal.Â
"That one," Joey said. The man handed Joey a giant, stffed blue eyes white dragon.Â
"Now you try," Joey said.Â
He handed the man three more dollars and got three baseballs in return. Kaiba grabbed a baseball and aimed. It missed the top right can by inches. The next one fell short buy several feet. The third one nicked the top left can, sending a shiver through it before it steadied.Â
"Nice," Joey laughed.Â
"Shut up," Kaiba growled. He dug in his pocket and found three american dollars. He handed those to the man and took aim again.Â
After half an hour Kaiba walked away empty handed and with thirty dollars less. Joey snickered beside him.Â
"Worse, freakin aim ever!" he laughed. Kaiba turned to glare at the mutt but it had no effect what so ever.Â
"Hey," Joey spotted something. "Want to go on the ferris wheel?"
Kaiba shrugged, "Whatever."Â
The two of them walked over to the ferris wheel. Joey paid the fee and they hoped in. It was a three person seat. Kaiba and Joey sat with the giant blue eyes white dragon between them. As the rose a soft wind began to blow, sending a shower of cherry blossoms cascading over them.Â
"How do you find this fun?" Kaiba asked as they rose steadily higher.Â
Joey shrugged. "I don't know, it just is. Just look at the view from here."Â
Kaiba looked and saw that it was very pretty, they could see all the city lights aglow in the late night.Â
As they rose to the top the ferris wheel shuddered to the stop. Joey watched in dawning horror as the lights began to blink off one by one.Â
"Oh shit..." he breathed.Â
"Power outage," Kaiba sighed. "We might be stuck up here a while."Â
The wind gusted and the seat rocked. Joey grabbed on to the handle, hands clenched onto the bar for dear life. He could barely see anything in the dim.Â
"You okay?" Kaiba asked, noticing Joey's white knuckled.Â
"Yeah," Joey lied, his voice unnaturally high. "Just fine..." his voice broke on the last word.Â
"What's wrong?" Kaiba asked, seeing through Joey's brave facade.Â
"Nothing," Joey said in a slightly normal voice. He closed his eyes and concentrated on breathing, in and out, in and out.Â
"Yes, something is wrong, what is it?" Kaiba demanded.Â
"I'm fine," Joey lied again.Â
"Are you scared of heights," Kaiba asked, deciding to solve this by elimination.Â
"No," Joey said. Even though the fear was still evident in his voice Kaiba could tell he was telling the truth.Â
"Then what?" Kaiba asked. "You can't possibly be afraid of the dark," he scoffed. By the silence from Joey he could tell he had hit the nail on the head.Â
"You're afraid of the dar?" Kaiba asked, trying not to laugh.Â
"Okay, laugh if you want, I don't care." Joey said. His hands tightened even more on the bar, he could feel his heart beat thrumming unnaturally fast through his fingers.Â
"You're serious," Kaiba said. He leaned back. His pup was afraid of the dark. From where he was he could hear Joey's panicky breathes.Â
"Come over here." Kaiba finally said. Mokaba had the same fear of the dark so this should be easy to take care of.Â
"Why?" Joey asked.Â
"Cause I said so," Kaiba said.Â
There was a moment of silence before Joey responded. "I don't think I can let go of the bar,"Â
Kaiba sighed. He moved the stuffed animal and scooted over to Joey. "Come here," he said, holding his arms open.Â
"No, I'm fine," Joey lied. Kaiba ignored him and pulled Joey into his arms. Joey hesitated a second before wrapping his arms tightly around Kaiba's middle, burying his face in Kaiba's chest.Â
"Why are you so afraid of the dark anyways?" Kaiba asked as he stroked Joey's hair.Â
Joey paused. "Well, when I was a kid my dad used to lock me in the closet for days on end. It was pitch black in their. I would claw at the door until my fingers bleed and scream until I was hoarse but he never opened the door. I guess I never grew out of that fear." Kaiba could feel the wild beating of Joey's heart.
"How could he do such a thing?" Kaiba asked, slightly mortified at the tale.Â
"I don't know..." Joey said truthfully. "He's always hated me so I guess it wasn't a big deal for him."
Hearing the pain and hurt in Joey's voice Kaiba wrapped his arms around him tighter. After a while Joey's breathing calmed and he relaxed into Kaiba. Kaiba continued to run his fingers through those blonde locks. They sat there for over an hour, just listening to each others breathing. The a single light in the distance flickered on.Â
"Joey," Kaiba whispered.Â
"Huh?" Joey asked, still hiding.
"Look," Kaiba said.Â
Joey lifted his head and looked. His eyes widened in shock at the light that dared to brave the night. Another light flickered on, then another. Joey leaned against Kaiba as more lights flickered on. Kaiba readjusted his grip so he could hold Joey closer. Instead of watching the lights Kaiba watched Joey by the small glow.Â
"Joey," Kaiba whispered.Â
Joey looked up, his chocolate orbs staring into Kaiba's icy blue ones. "Yes?"Â
"I have to tell you something," Kaiba said as he leaned closer. Their lips were inches apart.Â
What?" Joey asked. Kaiba closed the distance between their lips, waiting for Joey's permission before he deepened the kiss.Â
A soft breeze tugged at the two and sent cherry blossoms to intertwine with their hair. When they pulled away both of them were panting slightly, their breathes intermingling.Â
"I love you," Kaiba said, shocking himself with the declaration.Â
Joey smiled. "As do I," he murmured before kissing Kaiba again.Â
The cherry blossoms whispered over them, sealing the Sakura Kiss.Â
