Description
Kabia eyes flickered towards the door. Class had started an hour ago. Where was Yugi and Joey?Â
He bit his thumb against the worry that threatened to consume him. If they did not come back in another ten minutes he was going to start a man hunt!Â
The time ticked by slowly, seeming to taunt him. As the hand moved to announce five minutes had passed the door opened. Relief washed over him as he saw a timid Yugi standing at the door.Â
"You're late Mr. Mutto," the teacher said.Â
"Sorry sir," Yugi said quickly. "I won't let it happen again." Yugi walked into the room followed by broken looking Joey.Â
"You too, Mr. Wheeler," the teacher said, not sounding surprised in the least.Â
"Sorry teach," Joey muttered.Â
Kabia's eyes followed Joey as he walked to the back of the room. Joey sat and stared at the board without seeing anything. The rest of the day went through in a blur for both of the teenage boys, neither of them paying attention to any of the lesson.Â
When the bell rang Kabia was torn between going to Joey and not. To make his decision harder Yugi walked over to Joey and began talking. Finally, unable to stand his urge to be near Joey he walked over there.Â
"Hey Kabia," Yugi said brightly.Â
"Hey," Kabia replied, his eyes on Joey. Joey refused to look at him, instead his eye was fixed on the ground.Â
There was a moment of uncomfortable silence in which Yugi looked back and forth between Kabia and Joey.Â
"You ready to go?" Yugi finally asked Joey, breaking the spell of silence.Â
"Yeah," Joey shrugged.Â
"Where are you two going?" Kabia asked, being a bit nosy.Â
"I asked Joey out on a date." Yugi said simply. Kabia felt jealous rage through him.Â
"Oh," he said cooly, not giving away his inner feelings. "Have fun then."Â
Yuugi nodded and bid his farewells as Joey and him left. As soon as they leeft the room Kabia made a decision, he was going to follow them.
Yugi and Joey had agreed to go to Yugi's place first. Yugi wanted to get changed and Joey didn't really care.Â
"So, what movie are we seeing?" Joey asked as he sat down on the couch.Â
Yugi shrugged. "Whatever,"Â
"Well, since you're paying for the date you should get to pick the movie," Joey pointed out.Â
"Alright, I'll see what looks good when we get there."Â
"Okay,"
"I'm going to go get changed." Yugi disappeared upstairs, leaving Joey alone.Â
Unknown to Joey Kabia sat outside, hiding in the neighbors bushes. Sunglasses covered his eyes and a black trench coat was drawn around him. He glared at the front door, wondering what was going on inside.Â
"What are you doing here?" a voice asked, inches from his ear. He jumped out of his skin and turned around.Â
"Yami!" Kabia exclaimed. "What are you doing here?"Â
"Shhh, kepp your voice down! They'll hear." Yami said in a hushed whispered.Â
Kabia lowered his voice. "What are you doing here?"Â
"Probably the same thing you are, spying."Â
"On Yugi?"Â
"Yup, and I hope for your sake that you are spying on Joey 'cuz if you're spying on Yugi..." Yami's voice trailed off menacingly.Â
"I have no interest in that pipsqueak." Kabia said.Â
"He is not a pipsqueak!" Yami growled.Â
"Yeah, yeah, whatever." Kabia said, trying to keep the peace. "Why are you spying on him anyways? Didn't you break up with him?"Â
Yami looked at the ground. "I did break up with him but now... I miss him. I want him back. I was going to ask him today but then he asked that mutt out." Yami spat the word mutt as though it was something unholy.Â
"Hey, I'm the only one allowed to call Joey mutt." Kabia warned.Â
"Yeah, yeah, whatever." Yami said, turning his attention back to Yugi's house. Kabia growled quietly but stayed quiet.Â
"Ready to go," Yugi asked as he bounced down the stairs. Joey looked up to see Yugi dressed in black leather pants, a tight fitting black shirt, steel studded suspenders, a black dog collar, army boots, and a gold piercing in his left ear.Â
"Wow," Joey said, impressed. "You look nice."Â
Yugi blushed, nearly matching the red in his hair. "Thanks,"Â
Joey stood and smiled. "Let's go then,"Â
The two of them decided to walk to the movie theater that was only a mile away, unaware of the two following them.Â
"So, are we going to do anything to disrupted the date?" Kabia asked as they peered around the corner of a building.Â
Yami shrugged. "I don't know."Â
"Ok," Kabia said slowly. "If we're not going to do anything to stop them then why are we following them?"Â
"Cuz, it's a fun game," Yami chuckled.Â
"Game?" Kabia asked.Â
"The stalking game!" Yami said with flourish.Â
"What the hell!?" Kabia asked, standing up from their hiding place.Â
"Get down you idiot!" Yami hissed. "They'll hear us!"Â
He grabbed Kabia's hand and twirled him in a circle before diving behind a car. Joey and Yugi looked behind them, curious about the yelling they had heard. Seeing that there was no one there they shrugged and continued forth.Â
"That was close," Yami sighed in relief.Â
"Ouch!" Kabia said ruefully as he rubbed the back of his head. "That hurt."Â
"Then stop giving our position away. If you do that we lose the game."
"Oh God," Kabia sighed, face palming. "I'm stuck with a psycho!"Â
Yami choose to ignore that comment and dragged Kabia to their next hiding place. They followed the two to the movie theater and waited till they bought their tickets and disappeared inside.Â
"Give me some 800 yen," Yami held out his expectantly.Â
"Why?" Kabia demanded.Â
"So we can go follow them!" Yami said as though he was talking to a little kid.Â
"This is a 80 yen movie theater," Kabia pointed out.Â
"But I need snacks," Yami whined. "Besides you're rich. You can spare some money."Â
"You better pay me back," Kabia growled as he handed over the money.Â
"Of course," Yami said with a wink.Â
Kabia sighed and bought his ticket. He thought about getting something to eat but then remembered Joey. He bit his thumb and waited for Yami to grab his things.Â
"They are watching an american comedy called "Almost heroes"," Kabia said as they entered the movie theater. The first thing they noticed was that the only other people in there was Yugi and Joey.Â
"Hurry," Yami hissed. They slid into the back seats just as Yugi and Joey looked back. Both of them sighed in relief when they weren't recognized by they're lost loves.Â
"Thanks for doing this," Joey said to Yugi.Â
"No problem," Yugi said He blushed in the dark of the movie theater. "I've actually been wanting to ask you for a while. I'm glad you said yes."Â
"I'm going to kill Joey," Yami snarled as he watched the two. "Slowly and painfully."Â
"Not while I'm here," Kabia said as he gripped Yami's arms.Â
Everyone fell silent as the movie began playing. It was a remake of the Lewis and Clark expedition. Every one but Yami, who didn't go to school, knew about the whole expedition, having been forced to learn it two years ago.Â
"Hey Joey," Yugi whispered halfway through the movie.Â
"Yeah Yug?" Joey asked, turning to Yugi.Â
"What really happened?" Yugi asked, referring to Joey's injuries. "I know you weren't in a gang fight like you told everyone."Â
Joey bit his lip and sighed. "Of course, you would be able to tell when I'm lying." he said with a slight laugh. "Yeah, you're right. I wasn't in any fight. My dad got drunk again and... well, you know how he gets when he's drunk. It's no biggie though. I should be fine in a couple of days."Â
Kabia felt his breathe catch in his throat. Joey's dad had done that to him? His nails bit into the soft palms of his hands as he continued to listen.Â
"You sure?" Yugi asked, his eyes shining with concern for Joey.Â
"Yeah, it's only a broken arm," Joey smiled, trying to look carefree.Â
"What about your eye?" Yugi asked. Joey's smile faltered.Â
"It'll be alright," Joey lied, the quivering in his voice giving him away. "Though I'll probably be blind in that eye people have lived through worse." his smile felt false even to him.Â
Kabia felt sick as he heard Joey's words. Joey had a broken arm and was most likely blind and he didn't even care. And all of that was because of his dad! Anger boiled in Kabia's stomach. The skin underneath his nails gave away and blood began to coat his fingers.Â
"Joey..." Yugi whispered sadly. Yugi grabbed Joey's free hand. "Has this happened before,"
Joey looked away from Yugi's penetrating gaze. "Only a couple of time before," his lie was clear for everyone to hear.Â
"Joey," Yugi said softly.Â
Yugi grabbed Joey's chin and gently turned him to face him. Yugi leaned in and placed his lips softly on Joey's. Yugi pulled back for a second before kissing Joey again. This time Yugi added a bit of pressure behind his kiss. Joey had thoughts of pushing Yugi away, but then decided what was the point. The man he loved was never going to love him back and Yugi was such a sweet, nice friends, maybe it would be better this way. Joey closed his eyes and surrendered to the kiss.Â
A few seconds later Yugi pulled away, his face red even in the dm light. He let his face hover inches form Joey's.Â
"Was that okay?" Yugi asked. "I didn't do anything you didn't want to, right?"Â
"No Yug," Joey smiled. Though on the outside he was the perfect image of a loving boyfriend inside he was empty. "That was alright,"Â
Yugi smiled and kissed Joey again. Joey complied, noticing that he didn't feel so empty inside with Yugi's lips on his. Even though he wished it was another he was kissing Yugi was a great stand in.
Kabia, unable to watch anymore, silently slipped from the movie theater. Rage still sang in his veins from learning the origins of Joey's injuries.Â
"Where are you going?" Yami asked as he followed Kabia out into the hallway.Â
Where was he going? Kabia wondered. His fist tightened as he heard Joey's voice ago, telling Yugi his injuries were nothing.Â
"To that bastard's house," Kabia snarled.Â
"You can't be serious?" Yami said. "Wait, you saw what he did to Joey, he'll probably do worse to you!" Yami pointed out when he saw that Kabia was, indeed, serious.Â
"I don't care," Kabia said. "That bastard has to pay."Â
Yami sighed, knowing that it was no use in arguing. "Be careful,"
"Whatever," Kabia said. He stormed away from Yami. Yami watched him with sad eyes before disappearing back inside the movie theater.Â
Anger fueled Kabia's ascent to Joey's apartment. Tristan had told him how to get there once and he saw that he remember correctly. He stood outside the door marked #36. His knuckles rapped sharply on the door four times, the number of death. A couple of minutes passed before the door was opened by a grimy man in a stained wife beater.Â
"Lost yer key again, damn bitch?" the man asked. His breath reeked of alcohol. Slowly the man's gaze focused on Kabia. "You're not the little bitch." he said slowly. "Who the hell are you?"
"I'm a friend of Joey's," Kabia said sharply. The man's words were feeding to the fire of hate within him.Â
"You're that rich bastard I told Joey to stay away from," the man said. "Apparently he didn't listen, even after the beating I gave him lsat night."Â
Kabia grabbed the front of the man's shirt, no longer able to control his rage. "You gave him a broken arm and he is blind in one eye, you bastard! What do you have to say for yourself?"Â
The man started at him for a moment, then a deep, rumbling laugh filled the air. "Are you actually worried for that little slut?" he laughed even harder when he saw Kabia's eyes sharped with hate. "You are! You're actually worried for that piece of shit."Â
"He is not a slut, bitch, or a piece of shit!" Kabia yelled.Â
The man just continued to laugh in his face, his rank breath making Kabia sick. Kabia set him down, unable to stand being that close to the vile man.Â
The man stopped laughing. "Alright, listen here," he started. "You stay away the fuck from my son. He is my son and I don't give a shit to whether you care for him or not. If I find out you were hanging out with him again I will kick your ass."Â
"Do you know who I am?" Kabia asked, slightly amused at the thought that this man could kick his ass.
"I don't give a fuck,"Â the man slurred slightly. He snagged a bottle from the table inside and took a swig.Â
"I am Kabia, of the Kabia corporation. I own the biggest company in the world. I have my own army of specially trained soldiers." Kabia said threateningly.Â
"I don't care. If I can't hurt you I'll hurt the boy you care so much about." the man shrugged.Â
"And what if I take him away?" Kabia asked.
"Then I'll call you for kidnapping."Â
"And if I call child services."
"Me and him will be long gone by the time they ever get here."Â
"Why do you care so much about keeping him?" Kabia growled, unable to understand why this man, who obviously hated Joey, wanted him so badly.Â
"He's good for money." the man said simply. "Who else is going to keep up with my drinking."Â
Kabia had a flashback to lunch. Joey hadn't had a lunch. Had this man taken his money, leaving him with nothing?
"What about him?" Kabia asked.
"Who cares?" the man said. "He'll live. There's enough food for him to eat every other day. If he worked more he would have more food."Â
"Bastard," Kabia growled. "All you are is a filthy, greedy bastard."Â
"Yeah," the man challenged. "Well my son is just a no good, lazy, worthless, little bitch. I guess the apple doesn't fall too far from the tree." he laughed before drowning the noise in another swig of beer.Â
"Shut up," Kabia shoved him roughly.Â
The man staggered back before straightening out. He wiped the back of his hand across his mouth to erase the stray drops of beer.Â
"Did you just push me punk?" the man asked.Â
Kabia clenched his jaw in defiance. The man growled. Before Kabia could defend himself the man lunged towards him and threw a punch. Kabia staggered back. A small stream of blood trickled from the corner of his mouth.Â
"Go," the man said. "Just go before I do anymore damage."Â
Kabia tensed then turned to leave. "If you lay a hand on Joey," he threatened. "I'll kill you,"Â
The man laughed. "Really, 'cuz I was just thinking that he had to be punished for hanging around you again."Â
Kabia clenched his fist, drawing more blood. With long, angry strides he left the building before he could do something he regretted.
It was raining outside. Kabia looked up at the sky wondering if Joey was walking in this. He hoped that Joey was staying at Yugi's house even though they may be doing god who knows what. It would be better than Joey going home.Â
The answer to his question stood before him when he looked down. Joey stood before him, dripping with water. Kabia saw how baggy his clothes were, how they clung to his every rib. He saw the broken arm which gave him the impression of a hurt bird. He saw the red rimmed eye. He saw the eye that would never see again. And this time, instead of feeling anger he felt hopeless. Here Joey was, going home to a father who just going to beat him, because he just had to go see the man.Â
"Joey," Kabia said.Â
"What are you doing here?" Joey asked surprised.Â
"I..." Kabia faltered. "Well, that doesn't matter. Joey, you can't go home."Â
"Why?"Â
Kabia bit his thumb before answering. "I talked to your dad. He's not in a good mood. I think he's planning on hurting you..."Â
"Oh," Joey said. "Well, that makes sense. I didn't come home straight away. Plus I don't have any more money. I don't get my pay check till friday."Â
"Come home with me," Kabia practically begged, trying to keep the note of despair concealed.Â
"Kabia," Joey took a step closer and looked him straight in the eye. "I'm not going to take advantage of you."Â
"But," Kabia protested.Â
Joey placed a finger on his lips, silencing him. "I don't want to guilt you into anything. I'm doing fine on my own. I understand you don't feel the same way as me and I get it. I know your just trying to be nice, but right now you're hurting me even more. So please, leave me alone. I'll come back when I'm ready. You're still a great friend to me and I don't want to lose you." Joey wrapped a single arm around Kabia then released him before Kabia could do anything. "Bye Kabia, I'll see you tomorrow."Â
"Wait," Kabia grabbed Joey's hand. "At least take my phone number." Kabia grabbed a sharpie from his pocket and wrote down his cell phone number on Joey's hand. "Please, call me. If anything happens, call me."Â
"Kabia," Joey tried to pull his hand away but kabia held on tight.Â
"Promise me, please."Â
"I promise," Joey surrendered. Kabia held Joey's hand tighter for a moment before letting it go.Â
"Bye Kabia," Joey said as he continued to his apartment.Â
"Bye Joey," Kabia said, turning so he could watch Joey leave. He watched him until Joey disappeared inside his apartment building.Â
Kabia sat at his desk, staring at his phone. He was torn between wanting it to ring and not. If it rang that meant something was wrong with Joey but at least he could get to him. If it didn't ring then he had no idea what was happening to Joey.Â
His fingers drummed out a constant rhythm on the desk, his foot jiggling underneath his desk. Unable to stand the anticipation he stood and began pacing, four steps one way than the other. He sat back down and drummed on his laptop, not typing anything. Finally he placed his head in his hands, sighing. Please, he begged silently, please call, and soon.Â
Joey stumbled as his foot caught on the uneven pavement. He regained his balance as continued down the empty street. With his good hand he held his slashed side, blood dripping through his fingers. He was doubled over, trying to breathe. His ribs hurt, either bruised or broken.
His knees collapsed, unable to go on. He slumped against a pole. He sat, staring at the flickering light of the street lamp a few feet from him. His eyes wandered up. A pay phone, he was slumped against a pay phone.Â
He fumbled in his pocket, hoping he had some money. He discovered 60 yen that Yugi had given to him. With shaky hands he placed it in the slot for money. He fought to get on his knees and looked down at his hands. Kabia's number still guarded his hand, shrouded by blood. He punched in the number then sunk to the ground as the phone began to ring.Â
Halfway across time Kabia's cell phone rang. He lunged for it and flipped it open.Â
"Hello," he said breathlessly.Â
"Kabia..." Joey asked, his voice no more than a mere whisper.Â
"Joey," Kabia breathed. "Are you alright?"Â
"Yeah," Joey's voice collapsed into a cough. Joey looked at his hand which was not speckled in blood.Â
"Are you alright?" Kabia asked again, more urgently.Â
"Yeah, just a bit of blood." Joey said.Â
"Where are you?" Kabia demanded. His fear began to gnaw at him as Joey's voice grew weaker.Â
"There's something I need to tell you," Joey said.Â
"What?" Kabia asked.Â
"Trying not to love you only went so far, trying not to need you was tearing me apart." Joey rasped. "I tried, I really tired, but trying not to love only..." his voice trailed off as waves of black washed over him. He tried again. "Trying not to love you... only makes me love you more. Only makes... me... love... you... more..." Joey repeated one last time as the black waves overcame him. He slumped and toppled onto the ground, the phone tearing from his grasp.Â
