Hello there!
I was just adding some css to my gallerys and I noticed that I made a costume based on this lovely picture back then in 2010, but never asked or told you so. I'm very sorry I didn't ask in advance β I guess I was not so aware of everything back then, but at least I did credit you!
If you for some reason do not want to have costumes made based of your work, I'd understand and will take the pictures down. Maybe you'd like to have a look before, though?

Best wishes!

I haven't read through all the comments so if I'm repeating something already said please forgive.
Mulan wears a "hanfu" for the matchmatching seen. It IS traditional Chinese garb actually. The Japanese adapted it into the kimono during the Heian Period which would be around 800 AD.
The only reason I know this is because I wrote a term paper on Japanese fashion for one of my English Classes to piss off my teacher. Lol.

I realized what dress it reminded me of, is the dress Mulan wearing a Pien-fu?

Cool, but looks a bit too...debutante for Mulan. In my opinion anyways.

It is a nice transition.
Wait... Mulan in a Kimono? Isn't that centuries off AND in the wrong country?

Yes that's not a Kimono. Actually the one in the movie more resembles a Kimono because of it's many different layers. I did actually look up some Chinese clothes of that time period and tried to do a similar style because I didn't want it to look like a Kimono.

Do you know the type of dress it is? I saw a dress just like it on a website a while ago but couldn't remember the name of it.

It took centuries after that to get an obi, though! Arg!
Perosnally I like the styles of way back when they had the waist-high skirt, a bodice, and a jacket.

Eh, I'm not sure about it being a common traditional garb for a chinese person, I think Mulan's original outfit was moreso reminiscent of what you'd see chinese goddesses drawn in. Example: [link]
But Mulan's was simplified very much, as Disney has a tendency of doing, so it would appear like a kimono. The difference I think between them besides what go into it is the fact that the kimono is meant to hide the feminine form. The chinese goddess robes tend to emphasize the softness of them, their sleeves tend to go long, and the fabric is much less stiff than the stuff that goes into kimono.
I agree that it's annoying that any of them get mixed up. >.< Korean, Chinese, or Japanese.

Ah, well that's probably it. I actually looked up some traditional Chinese gowns online and I came across the one I put her in. So might be my mistake in putting her in something non traditional. I know there were a lot less layers in Mualn's outfit than a regular kimono and also she didn't have a huge obi. But a lot of people think she's Japanese because of the clothes she wears.
Haha, yea, those three are somewhat hard to distiguish culturally sometimes!

She looks great in yellow o_o The style and patterns of the dress suit her, too.
The grass and floral stuff behind her are very perfect, because they look cool and misty-ish...*bad at describing things XD*

Haha, it's ok, I have trouble describing things too! Don't worry about it! I didn't really like how the background came out though... ehhh....Thanks though!
