Description Prop: Bow
Used By: Susan Pevensie
Movie: The Chronicles of Narnia
First Worn To: PortCon Maine '09
Made For: Cary
Awards: Best Prop

So this is the bow that I made for Cary in exchange for my High King Peter the Douche costume for PortCon '09. It started off as a panel of poplar shelving wood and after many attempts, became this lovely bow. The string is elastic, so, while the wood doesn't bend itself, there is the illusion of the bow being drawn. The gold on the string is all hand wrapped, and the wood grain is actually painted on; it's not stained. Uhm... There's more I could say about this, but those are the highlights.

Due to a lot of interest in how I made this sucker, I have typed up a quick over-view. Read on if you care about that kind of thing!

1) I went online and I spent hours searching for tutorials, people who have made this prop before, and reference pictures.

2) I figured out how long the bow would have to be to be in proportion with the person I was making it for.

3) I purchased the wood from Home Depot... poplar, I believe it was, because it has less knots in it, and is relatively soft and easy to carve.

4) I took a reference picture from online, blew it up to life size and printed it out over multiple pages and taped them together; I cut it out and traced it onto the wood and used a jigsaw to cut it out.

5) Using a router table I rounded out the edges, so it became cylindrical and spent the next few weeks shaping and sanding it down. And when I say "weeks" I mean hours a day for nearly three weeks. I used a dremel tool to carve out the filigree on the tips.

6) After about two weeks and roughly $50 worth of paint products, we figured out a way to paint the wood grain on. Fun tip: the best way is to paint the light base coat and let it dry, then do a heavier, darker brown over it and drag a used paint brush with a choppy edge through it to make the grain.

7) Painted the tips with an ivory spray paint. Cut out the pleather for the grip and used a soldering iron to emboss it. I printed the lion image out on a piece of vellum paper and put that over the pleather. The heat still worked, and the paper kept it from melting all the way through.

8) Finally, I got a length of white elastic, used a maroon marker to color it (you're going to want to stretch it between two poles, or something and color it while it's stretched out, otherwise it'll look funny when you stretch it), and wrapped gold thread around the middle of elastic and the loops. And glued the gold bits around the grip. And glued the grip on. Y'know, little things. Like the vines.

Info You May Find Helpful:
The bow weighs less than a pound. I don't actually own a scale, so I can't give you an exact amount, but it's extremely light for carrying ease at the con.

From tip to tip, measuring on the outside (so you get all the curves and stuff) it's 39 inches. From tip to tip where the string goes, it's ~30.5/31 in.

Any other questions, comments, critiques, I'd love to have them!

It seems its been a few months since you asked your questions so I thought I'd reply for you.

1. If you make it this way, it's ONLY good for a prop. The reasons are because the wood has to bend to give it resistance. This user mentioned how it does not bend and how the string stretches. The string also shouldn't stretch.
Also, there is no notch for the arrows to sit on. If it worked properly and you shot it, the back of the arrows would hurt your hand. even if u have a glove, it still needs a notch.

2. The arrows are pulled back to your cheekbone. So, the arrows would accurately need to be longer than your arm.(past shoulder to hand with fingers extended) it's better to make it too long than too short.

Hope this helped.

Ah.... Although I am not really in this discussion, I thought I could help. I came across this pic as I was researching the details of Susan's bow (I am attempting to make a fully-functional replica. After finding multiple sources on recurve making, I find the best woods to make bows out of are: Ash, yew, or for a cheaper, easier one, hickory. Susan's bow is made of ash, which is the route I am going. (I guess this only helps if you are making a real one, but cest la vie. Just for info.)

Hey! I'm so sorry it took me such a long time to get back to you! Unfortunately, I don't take commissions, but you can try to find someone who does on the Commissions: For Hire Marketplace on Cosplay.com! There are a bunch of helpful people over there who will take commissions. I hope you find what you're looking for!

Wow!!! You did anmazing job on this prop. This particular bow is something I've been wanting a lot since I was around 11 years old when the first Narnia movie came out. From reading earlier comments I see that you are sadly not selling it, but I've attempted at making it out of PVC pipe but have always wanted to make it out of wood. Do you think you could maybe give me close to exact directions on how you made this? That would be extremely awsome!!!!!! Thanks! And great work!!!

Oh my gosh, I'm soooooo sorry! These past few months have been extremely hectic for me; I've only recently been able to log into the PSG account, and unfortunately, Cary doesn't know the information you're looking for!

Here we go!
As stated above, the length from tip to tip, measuring on the outside (so you get all the curves and stuff) is 39 inches. From tip to tip where the string goes, it's ~30.5/31 in.
Also as state above, I don't know exactly how much it weighs, but it's definitely less than a pound!

As for buying a replica, I would try E-Bay for a manufactured product. If you're looking for someone to commission, you could ask around the Commissions: For Hire Marketplace on Cosplay.com and see if anyone take commissions for props. I'm not sure if the people on there are mostly costumers or what, so you'd have to find that out yourself.

OR, as a third option, you could make it yourself! That way, you know what you're getting, you have interesting stories to tell at the con, AND you get the pride and sense of accomplishment that comes with a job well done!

haha no problem. And don't worry about messing up the bird house-- my first birdhouse came out looking like it'd been in some sort of natural disaster! I hope you're able to find what you're looking for!

Aww, that stinks. I'm sorry :C I would suggest you keep looking back to see if anything goes up for sale on e-bay, or if someone new comes along the Cosplay.com forums who can take a commission. I'm sure you've made some contacts over there by this point in your search; perhaps they can also give you ideas of where to look, or names of people who build props on commission. I don't know that sort of info off the top of my head unfortunately, as I don't do commissions myself.

I hope you find what you're looking for, though!

Well, depending on how quickly you need it, we do take commissions for costumes (just not props unfortunately). A good place to check is also Cosplay.com (if you go to the marketplace and then to Commissions: For Hire you'll find a whole list of people who can make costumes for you).

Mallebabyz [2009-12-22 01:33:38 +0000 UTC]

considering the string is elastic can you estimate the poundage of the draw back? I'm a bit curious, by hopes and dreams of being able to pull a 50lb bow.
The craftmanship is very nice I love the wood and the carving. Narnia!!!!! yay!!!!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

PrincessSnowglobing In reply to Mallebabyz [2009-12-23 03:34:51 +0000 UTC]

Um... I would have to say... probably 0lb? I mean, the string is elastic so that the wood doesn't have to bend, but has the illusion of being drawn back. The bow itself isn't fully functioning, and wouldn't be, even if the string was actual string.

Sorry I can't help you more. I hope that answers your question! And thank you for the favorite! 8D
