or you can't see all the little details.

Well, I just finished this with only two hours until the deadline. This is my entry for Saimain's contest [link] and it is drawing of her adorable character Sali. Here is her descpirtion of him:

Shaftan (a winged elf race). He has turquoise eyes, long white hair that curls at the edges, fluffy white wings, and very pale skin. He generally wears loose and airy clothes (like gauze, I suppose?), or sometimes nothing at all. He’s small for his age (he can be drawn anywhere from 5 to 14 years old), and his long ears bend downward at the tips.
Orphaned as a baby, Sali remembers little of his past, and makes the most of every day, happy to please. He was watched over from birth by his uncle, Patch, until Patch's untimely death at the hands of Julian. Taken under Kris' wing, he flourishes under the attentive care and safety that Kris provides, and loves to follow Kris about on his duties and often imitate him. A vibrant and bouncy little Shaftan, he collects shells, jewelry, and other shiny objects like a packrat, and stores his treasures in a small cave near the sea.

Everything was done in prismacolor pencil. Everything! Which took quit a long time to finish, but this was so much fun to do. I am happy with how the drawing turned out and hope you like it to Saimain.

Please leave comments and tell me what you think

Also, please tell me if the picture is dark or blurry or anything because the computer I'm on has a dark screen. I used one Wolfcat's stock as reference for Sali's position, altered a little of course [link]

Please don't not take or alter this picture. The character is (c)Saimain and the drawing is mine.

Wow that looks excellent!

you have put some very hard work in this and it shows

Love the composition, the sea background looks lovely.

You could add some more shadows and highlights to the charater to give it more volume...

Great work

Thank you so very much!!

Yes, I agree with you on the shadows and highlights. That's definitely two areas I need to work on. I tried several different things on this drawing and learned quit a bit. Next time, I will work on the light and shadows. Again, thank you for the suggestion. It's always great to learn from fellow artists.

*BLUSHES* Thank you so much!!

I love my colored pencils. They are wonderful to work with, but by the time I finished this my poor finger was about to fall off. Glad you like the sand and sea! Those are the two areas I really tried doing something different with my pencils.

Appreciate the comment!!

Gahh! Did it take a long time to do. I was afraid I might not finish it, but I submitted it with only two hours to spare. I had worked on it a lot before, but during my spring break I colored and shaded on this piece for two and a half days straight!! It was really fun though, so it was well worth it.

I really like the work you did here. The water and sky especially. The water is just amazing. I always have such a hard time with water--especially making it look shiny. I think I just don't have the patience to do it. You did really awesome. I also love how soft and smooth the clouds look. All the jewelry and shells are wonderfully detailed too. I love the bits of shine on the necklaces and jewels.

Sali looks so happy with all his treasures. Very cool detailing on the rocks too--especially the area just behind Sali's head.

Thank you so much for your nice comment! It was really fun to put in all of the details with my colored pencils. My sister jokingly made fun of me because I was so diligent with this piece. She specifically thought it was funny that I gave the sand dollar a shadow with a chip cut out and she really got a laugh out of the fact that I gave the necklace one the far left hinges.

I was very happy with how the shine on the jewelry turned out because that was something different I tried out with my white colored pencil. Gah! did the water seem to take forever. I blended like six different colors in it alone, not including the white color of the paper, but it was a very enjoyable learning experience.

I really appreciate the detailed comment and fav!!!! Congrats! on winning the contest.

Thank you very much!!!

The water was the most time consuming portion for what little space it actually takes up. The white in the water is what took the longest. It's actually the paper I drew on, so I had to be extra careful not to color over what I wanted to remain white. Thanks for the comment!
