beautiful light and beautiful trees. there's something quite refreshing about the picture - the feeling of the forest, the air of the evergreens.

and it was. i quite enjoyed the walk in this forest. it's a natural reserve of Cedars. unfortunatly there is not so many left in Lebanon, and they are our national symbol, the evergreen Lebanon..

i know, on your flag, and "cedars of lebanon" is an image of strength going back thousands of years, it is in the bible... may the efforts of those trying to save and bring them back be fruitful. (i don't know how strong the efforts are, wikipedia says they are there...)

there are people trying, i visited personally 3 cedas forest until now, the big one, the oldest in the Arz region (arz means cedars in arabic) and two others thet are natural reserves, younger trees, but protected.
the problem in our country is that laws are never completely respected, there are always exceptions, for everything. corruption is everywhere.
and the concept of ecology is not well implanted in the mentalities. i hope the new generations will be more aware but as i see things going i doubt it. they sure know about the word, but to do an effort will be too much to ask from them.
i may be pessimist though, and ignorant of what is really happening on the ground.

laws and the respecting of laws are two such different things. and corruption makes democracy so difficult.
i go back and forth between optimism and pessimism on many issues. in this country, we had pollution so bad forty years ago that a river in Ohio actually caught on fire... and that was finally cleaned up. but there is so much resistance. here, the push back against doing what is right ecologically is from big businesses - "oh, we will make less money if we have to be green" - i don't know if that's an issue in Lebanon. there's always resistance.

i'm sure there is of this too here, economic factors always enter in the balance. add to this ignorance and arrogance.
not every body of course, but the big majority.

ignorance, arrogance - and fear - the demonic trio. our worst politicians are always trying to scare us. they are not in the majority at the moment, but they still have immense power.

sad truth, yes.
how far we have come from the cedars photo! but it's because everything is connected. that's something these people we are talking about don't realize - the connection. they think, "oh, i don't have to think about tomorrow" "i can be a little corrupt" - but in the end the damage will reach everyone.
