Solemnity. THAT is the main point. She looks just... So wise, so deep, so incomprehensible.
The light is perfect, because only her eyes are shaded, though her blond hair seems to be rays of sun.
The hood is very ambiguous ; first, hearts, looking like some snowflakes, add a true sweetness to the photo. However, the "ear", down, is definetely sad-looking.
Then, how hard it is to shoot children! They're much more spontaneous as adults, that's the great point, but a so strong and mature expression is... Barely impossible to shoot. At least I thought it before seeing this portrait e.deviantart.net/emoticons/let⦠" width="15" height="15" alt="

This is a great image. The main flaws I see are minor. I don't like the coat the little girl is wearing - this is a personal opinion and not a critique on the image itself, except that in I may not have chosen this image to be this image because of the wardrobe choice. I have children though, and understand the challenges in photographing them.
The other minor problems I have is the lack of contrast in the upper left quadrant, where the hood blends into the background. Also, the eyes are a bit difficult to make out, I'm not sure if that is a contrast issue, clipping issue or conversion issue developed in the BW conversion.
That all aside, lets focus on the awesome, as there is lots of it. Although I don't like the hood, as I mentioned, the texture is neat (even if I can't handle fleece, yick, gives me goosebumps!) and adds to the image. The ears are slightly distracting, but also interesting and create some visual interest. They also create emotional interest, as they seem to be contrary emotionally to the subject.
The hair is great, as is the expression on the subjects face. As one reviewer said, it's hard to tell if she is sad, sleepy or simply looking down. However, I get the sad feeling most strongly, heightened by the use of black and white and the dropped, somewhat untidy, hair.
The background is nice. The separation of the subject from the background is very good except in the one area mentioned, and really pulls the subject out towards the viewer. The negative space in the background around the subject's head also amplifies this feeling.
The lips are great, probably the best aspect of the image as a whole. The texture is visible, and perfect. The "colour" is excellent, very strong contrast draws the eyes and does not let go. they are also nearly as focused as the hood, and because of that do not lead to viewer disorientation. If this was reshot with hindsight (not that it needs to be) one thing could be to focus a tiny bit more carefully on the lips, that would also soften the texture of the hood as it would be in the pre-focal distance.
Over all this is a strong image. The subject is great and conveys lots of emotion. The emotion is heightened by the black and white conversion and there are no major defects in composition to lead the eyes away from the image. This image is compelling to look at, and in that, is a success.

You cannot tell if she is happy or sad, but I think she is just looking down at something or a sleepy girl. Black and white was great for this shot since it brought out her physical characteristics so beautifully, i.e. lips, eyes and her hair gently whisking across her face. In addition I think you took into account how the colors in her coat would have taken away from her beautiful face. I think you did a great job with getting a shot like this. Your technique was very impacting on me. I think you took a Great shot. Good job.
