It's a game changer, in the same time not really.
The Corvette has been always known for affordable car with ferrari levels of performance.
While this is a higher spec than say, a base model C7.
There's a catch, unlike the previous corvettes, this is untunable.

It's obvious that aftermarket brands will have another shiny new toy to play with.

Well yes and no.
Aftermarket mods are mostly gonna be cosmetic, but performance wise it's gonna be difficult.
For one, the engine is surgically mounted into the engine cabin, there isn't much space to stuff more things in there.
and for two, the ECU is encrypted and locked.

All it takes is a strong will and brains.

that's not how it works actually.
Like I said before, the ECU is both locked and encrypted.
The ECU is the brain of the car, if it's locked then it's very sensitive to change, tuning it will cause it to stop working, and even if you hacked it somehow, it's still encrypted, that means only Chevy knows the language of the C8, it's gonna take a year(or years) or so to hack and understand it fully.
If you want to replace the ECU, then it's gonna be costly, maybe not gonna make it near the Ferrari budget, but 2,000-2,500dollars is still cost, while in other cars you can do it without spending.
And the engine bay isn't really that great, I saw pics of it, it's really really carefully planted in, if you want to supercharge it for example, you are gonna need a very very very very compact supercharger, unless you want to cut the rear bumper, or the hatch or whatever is left from the back of your seat.
An engine swap is more doable in that case, but I don't know if anyone really wants that, engine swaps are heresy to a lot of people.

Perhaps because Chevy want to soup up the Corvette themselves and not have others do it for them.
I don't think ECU replacement is required.
They mounted the engine lower for a better centre of gravity.

Which is bullshit imo, Corvettes were one of the best tuner cars you can get, in fact some tuner shops ONLY tune Corvettes and they do it better than Chevy themselves.
Search up Guldstrand, Lingenfelter, Spectre Werks and Callaway Cars to name a few, Hennessey is also known to make 1200hp C7 Corvettes, but they don't tune Corvettes exclusively so there's that.
Coming from the first statement a lot of cars are also based on the Corvette, using the base to build the desired car, Eg. Bertone Mantide, Equus Throwback, Scaglietti Corvette, N2A Anteros, SV-9 Competizione, Genovation GXE, etc.
True, but looking at the ECU with it's cybersecurity protection properties, some people would find it better to just skip taking years understanding it..
Companies(usually supercar companies) have been doing that for ages, they are just not as vocal with it, I know even the BRZ does that.
I don't really trust Donut Media, they are known to hype stuff up, I haven't watched the thing yet and I can tell they are hyping it up like it's the next best thing after sliced bread.

Callaway and Hennessey are definitely going to tune the C8 sooner or later.
Don't even get me started on the Corvette replicas.
It's basically protection from what, blackmail?
Even little changes can make a big impact.
Donut Media have a talented team and are fun to watch, especially James and Up To Speed.

It's true, but it's a shame really, a lot of those tuner shops are either gonna close down or just change to tune something else, so much for variety..
Like the Mitsuoka Rockstar? I like that one.
Protection from nothing, it's like the car equivalent of DRM in video games.
It's the same way Ford uses to get more money from buyers by complicating things too much, so people can't fix it themselves, but come back to the dealer.
Yep, even the little details.
Couldn't argue with that, although I still don't like the altitude of them as if they wanted to sell me the car, cars have weaknesses, and the Corvette definitely isn't perfect, if they want to showcase the car they should show the advantages and the disadvantages of said car.
otherwise it would feel too much like an advertisement.

Welp.
What?
Maybe Ford thinks their consumers wouldn't understand what's happening under the hood.
Yep.
They're trying to promote upcoming cars that may just tickle our fancy, they're not trying to sell us the cars.

Are you talking about shitty replicas, or actual Corvette replicas? because the Mitsuoka Rockstar (pic ) is a Corvette replica based on the Mazda MX-5.
Hah, no, back then you would get a car manual that explains everything.
My friend Usagi for example has a 2006 Ford Ranger, he has to disassemble a quarter of the front end to replace a simple spark plug, there's just no reason for that, it's not like Ford is a small kit car company that makes cars out of plastic and have 0 experience, it's a really giant company.
And so it's either get a lot of tools and take A LOT of time to replace even the simplest thing(Because Ford made it harder), or let Ford do it for your money, it's scummy, but it's a working business practice.
Eh, sometimes it felt that way, especially when the Ford Edge ST came out, they really made it sound greater than what it actually is.
Hell the Edge ST has artificial sound, and the exhaust itself is fake, that same friend of mine even took a pic of what the exhaust looked like.
but we didn't get any info about that did we? All we got is a weak comparison with it against Audis and the Focus ST.
I don't hate Donut Media, they are full of talented people and they are entertaining. It's just that I don't really find them that reliable of a source.

Replicas made from Corvettes.
Here's something you won't see in the C8. A manual transmission. And for good reason, as the manual C7 sold poorly. It wouldn't make sense for Chevy to make it an option if nobody wants it.
I'm not a car whisperer, so I leave the tuning and stuff like that to the pros and video games.
Wow. Just, wow.
Give Donut a chance, they'll grow on you.

Those are kinda rare to find, most replicas are from cheap mid engined sports cars like the MR2 or the Fiero.
But I guess sometimes I can underestimate some people's stupidity, by ruining an expensive car into a fake lambo.
Aww that's sad, all the performance with half the fun.
Sales didn't matter, the convertible sold even worse.
That's fine too, just enjoy yourself with those wonderful pieces of machinery, that's all what really matters.
I already am subbed to them, mostly for news or otherwise funny videos.

ProjectOneAMG In reply to RedStoneKsa [2019-09-07 23:30:13 +0000 UTC]
True dat.
Yeah, but the convertible on the other hand, is here to stay. But that is not to say that the new 8-speed dual clutch isn't great. It clicks off shifts in less than 0.100 seconds and provides continuous torque, which is definitely faster than a manual.
Truer words have never been said. I can't wait to drive the C8 Corvette in a good driving game.
Good. ^^

RedStoneKsa In reply to ProjectOneAMG [2019-09-07 23:47:03 +0000 UTC]
Don't get me wrong, I know the dual clutch is faster, it's just not as fun.
Slamming gears just never gets old, and I can't clutch kick or rev match a DCT either.
Thankfully Forza can probably let me do that.
^^

Agreed, manual is still one of the things you really have to try to know how it feels like.
I tried both, I had automatic first, then I drove a manual 2007 Accent, it was a lackluster car, had a suspension made out of coke cans it felt like, and had probably around 50hp, and that was actually more fun than my V8 Holden(rip), now I don't have that Accent(because I don't own it) anymore and I really miss it, despite it being comparably worse than anything else, even my Sonata feels soulless compared to that one stick shift boi.
My perfect analogy would be like microwaved food and cooked food, microwaving is faster and more convenient and easy to use, but it's just not as rewarding.
Now I'm not changing your opinion, but that's just my experience with those transmissions, I even tried a column shifter, 1-speeds in karts, CVT, and an SMG, hoping to find a pre-selector gearbox someday, that's probably the hardest one to find, because it's like a 1930s exclusive.

I've tried using manual in Gran Turismo, I quickly and badly found out how bad I am with said transmission. XD
I see.

RedStoneKsa In reply to ProjectOneAMG [2019-09-08 19:14:40 +0000 UTC]
That's how it's gonna be in the new C8, but don't worry, that transmission needs practice, didn't get it first try.
Master it, and I guarantee you it's gonna be hard to go back.
Wow I talk too much xD

Upshifting is easy, downshifting is where the difficulty comes.
π: 0 β©: 1
RedStoneKsa In reply to ProjectOneAMG [2019-09-09 15:28:10 +0000 UTC]
It only needs practice, in GT Sport manual downshifting is faster than the automatic equivalent(automatic takes way too long).
If you are constantly banging on the rev limiter, you are either downshifting too quickly or downshifting on top of whatever gear you are in.
I recommend doing practice in something with long gears, if you have an Audi R8 LMS try using that.
Listening to the car can also give you clues in when to downshift, the R8 LMS is loud, and so is very easy to understand.
About time it's gonna be second nature.
