Description A painting I did years ago showing the K4s 8157 on a fast passenger train passing an I1s Decapod pulling a drag freight. Track pans are between the rails of either track to allow taking on water with a scoop, thus saving time.

I wonder if the K4 would haul freight trains?

This painting is amazing. Besides the I1 and the K4 being on the wrong tracks, I love this, especially the track pans.

A passing movement on a two track main line.  The dispatcher put the freight on the wrong main (eastbound) to let the passenger by.  The freight will switch back to the right track (westbound) at the next turnout.  This keeps both trains moving with no lost time.  Had the eastbound been occupied the freight would have had to go into the hole, possibly stabbing the passenger, but at the very least delaying its own progress.
Of course, I didn't think this out when I painted the picture, I just wanted to have two of my favorite engines in it.  And the track pans.

There was no way an I1s would outrun a K4 anyway. The weight distribution and the fact it didn't have as much support under the firebox as it should have pretty much limited it to about 35 mph tops before it started to develop a very noticeable shake from things I have read. I would LOVE to see them get the one in Hamburg, NY running again. If the information is to be believed, the I1 had almost as much tractive effort as a UP Challenger, which would make it an excellent excursion engine because most places you could go these days in the east wouldn't let you go above 35mph most of the time anyway.

Quite right. The I1s was limited to 35 MPH, but many were modified to I1sa which was allowed up to 50 MPH due to semi-disc main drivers. 90000 lbs tractive effort on the I1s. Don't know what it is for a Challenger. The 4-6-6-4 could move a lot faster, though.
