This isn't anything to do with the Lexus IS series car, but more about the horribly ugly wheels...

Congratulations on your exciting success! This promises you a very ...no...EXTREMELY secure and bright future! The car is hella cool! How did you actually achieve the art? Is it a model, you now like a model airplane or car that comes in a box...only better!

The photos of the built car looks a bit off. I think they just expanded the wheelbase and didn't build this 100% to design for SEMA. The wheels looked too small and the rear frame was a bit too low compared to the drawing. Also, it didn't have the same lining which made this car standout. Colors are off too. Oh well. Congrats again.

Sketchup is great for basic modeling and visualization, I use the free version. Throw in a bit of PS and you can get some dynamic elements.

I'm sorry, but honestly I don't like the design. At the risk of being blunt, I hope to never see this on the road.
Why?
Because:
(WARNING: Personal thoughts here, I'm not a style-guru, but a student in Automotive Engineering. So don't be offended, please.)
1. Clearly has no soul. It doesn't tell me "I'm sporty and elegant, serious and fun at the same time! I'll make you fall in love with me " like the top-placed "sports" as Alfa 8C or BMW M3 (or even M5 last-series). It tells me "Meh, whatever: I'm furious and have a 4-litre under the bonnet, so I'm gonna whoop your ass you like it or not. Also, I'm technologically more advanced than you...". Yeah, arrogant :/
2. The main concept to me is sort of a "I've seen it already": BMW 320i-styled sides and rear (not as boring, but still), Audi A4 front (with squished grille), DTM-AMG-like vents topped with the BMW M5 carbon roof. To be honest, it is more of a patchwork than a car to me, and if I were a lawyer this car would be my wet dream for copyright infringement.
3. This car would be really impractical: the real product will certainly be a compromise between the original design and real-world engineering solutions, with their cost problems included. This isn't bad if the concept is well-balanced and keeps in mind that not everything is possible without the right tools, but this design isn't: too many spikes flying around, winglets that have no absolute purpose to be there ( front ones, behind the wheel: I see heavy understeer coming up, frankly), too many dead spots (the sight areas covered by the sides of the glasses when you say into the cockpit) and too big. As engineer, it would be my nightmare for months to come, trying to match your design to the right math to make it solid enough, powerful enough, secure enough and economic enough to be mass-produced.
Again these are my thoughts but, as the human I am, I could be proven wrong with time.
To me you have great talent in this, but you lack the right knowledge: go to Wiki, buy books about cars, especially european ones, look at them. Only knowing the classics you can build a well-styled car.

I agree with you GabSonic
Unfortunatly this design was the 1st place winner.
I wasn't able to get my design finished / posted in time mostly because I didn't know about the contest unit like 3 days before the due date.
1stly It actually seems like all three winners did a lot of the same old same old (no offense) flare out the fender here cut a hole in there, which is typical in a contest like this.
2nd What I noticed the most was it feels like the three winners just drew until they had something that looked "cool" and didn't actually have much of a thought process beyond the initial rough draft in their heads. I also noticed they did not put any effort forth to give this car a paint job that would match the modifications done.
This design in particular was obviously incomplete the rims completely lack any noticeable detail and because of this they are quite ugly.
For a Higher performance car all the winning designs lack the character to match the performance
I still congratulate the winners however I believe they should all take another look at their designs and add in the missing pieces of the puzzle.
If anyone wanted to see a Far from finished work in progress I have a piece in my scrap album. I decided to model my submission instead of manipulating the provided artwork in the asset package.

Myrenous In reply to psas [2013-08-26 13:31:49 +0000 UTC]
indeed, I looked at your other works and right away I could tell that this lexus design was probably incomplete but was complete enough to submit as most of the major detail was present but not fully refined.
Also it looks as though my comment was hidden, I'm not sure what purpose that really serves other then to hide criticism. As a professional the only advice I will give is to open yourself to the critiques of your peers, doing so allows you to become better. ignoring them and hiding them does the opposite. You should follow your own advice that you gave to GabSonic and keep your mind open, in this case to the possibility that someone who gets paid to do stuff like this everyday is trying to help you become better.
Congrats of your victory keep refining and honing your skills.

Sorry for hiding the comment, I am a bit unfamiliar with the deviantart interface. The comment should be visible. I welcome criticism and currently work as a designer professionally. I was joking about cool being overrated. Cool is everything when SEMA is the context.

GabSonic In reply to hugosilva [2013-08-22 23:28:49 +0000 UTC]
Sadly it isn't: a show car is just for display, it hasn't to be run anywhere, this has. Lexus isn't a company that has money to throw off the windows in show cars. And, because it isn't a show car, the design is painfully wrong technically speaking.

Well, show car or not, I still stand by what I said before.
To be completely honest, show cars haven't to be all winglets and aggressiveness: look at the 2012 Pininfarina Sergio, a modified showcar based on a Ferrari 458 Italia, or even the 1970 Ferrari 512 Modulo. Google them, they're awesome pieces of design if you ask me: simple yet clear and astonishing.

Congrats to 1st place!
Personally, I think the 2014 Lexus IS series looks worse than its predecessor. So much so that my family members are dissuaded into buying the new one. But, if we ever get such a face-lift like this on the vehicle, I'd consider buying it. I hope Lexus gets inspired from this.
