Description Bit of a love-hate thing with this one. On one hand, I really love how it looks. On the other, I'm a bit put off with how Fai really does look like a girl. Also, the pipa/biwa is out of proportion, even if I happen to think long and thin is prettier. The background texture came from Pixlr-o-matic, which can be found [here ], the font came from [here ].

The Chinese word is 鳳, which reads as feng. It comes from fenghuang, which means phoenix. 鳳 actually refers to the masculine phoenix. In the past, the fenghuang was both masculine and feminine. However, nowadays the fenghuang has feminine connotations. This is so that the fenghuang can be paired with the chinese dragon (a masculine force) as a feminine entity. I refused to put huang (凰) beside Fai, because it is a feminine word.

Line-art can be found [here ]. You have to put in "eyeshadow" or Fai's eyes will look strange from afar. Anyone is welcomed to try coloring, but please leave a link below if you do.

Well, practice makes perfect in any case. And SAI allows me to cheat to unholy degrees. I take complete advantage of the fact that I can manipulate the lines AFTER I've draw them.

I take the longest on line-art because I always take so long to get the proportions right. And then I always make sure that there are no gaps in my lines so that when I magic wand it I won't have trouble. Sigh, sometimes I think I should stop doing that, because those paintings with sketchy line-arts can be pretty charming as well!

The modern character you are looking for feng is ( 凤) It's pronounced with what is known as a fourth tone. The feng (风) which means wind lacks the bar over the x inside the radical and has a third tone. You could use either the traditional or simplified character, the traditional character is not (鳳) totally obsolete, if you were using the Japanese name which is Hoo-oo and writing Kanji you would use the traditional form. I use both just in case, but the simplified version I know is what most people are becoming familiar with. I hope this helps. Your drawing is beautiful and serene.

Ah, you're right. I never knew that Japanese kanji still used 鳳. Next time if I'm looking for an online font generator for that character I will use a Jap one instead of a Chinese one. The Chinese ones mostly simplified them for me, and most of the downloaded ones didn't register the character I still prefer the look of 鳳 to 凤 somehow. I think it's because I keep seeing 凤 as 风 haha.

I agree I prefer traditional characters myself. I could never embrace simplified, I don't know why. In Japan, Hong Kong, Cantonese speaking provinces in China, and many China Towns the traditional system is still used.

A good Chinese online dictionary is www.nciku.com/ they will show both traditional and simplified characters, it is also very extensive. [link] is a very good site for Kanji and Kana. thanks

I don't know D: but this fittingness is going against my feminist... ahem, uke-ist principles.
