Description After drawing a CREEPY SELF PORTRAIT yesterday, I found that I enjoyed the process a lot if not necessarily the result, so I wanted to do some more painty portrait things!

Struggling to come up with subject matter to work with, I decided to YET AGAIN return to the MARDEK characters, since some people actually know and to some degree even care about them, and it'd be nice to see how I've improved since some versions of them that I did forever ago.

Rather than just doing the same old bland sort of thing, though, I thought I'd do them with some kind of relevant twist or something!
This one's Rohoph-in-Mardek's-Body rather than Mardek by himself; doesn't he look like someone you'd trust and invite around to parties for a good bit of old fun and so on?

It's a lot more FUN for me to paint this way than it is to bugger around with tedious lineart... though I never have the patience to go down into the nitty-gritty details that would really make it look refined and professional or whatever. OH WELL. Maybe eventually, I'll get there!

Also, I didn't use any references or anything, so there are loads of FLAWS and so on (like the lighting), but I feel that I'm at least more knowledgeable now than I was a few weeks or months ago!

I really like how this drawing looks!
Technical mistakes (that you see because you know your stuff, and which I - and I think most people who aren't proficient at drawing - don't see because I don't know it, so that is not a problem at all, I'd like to say/think) often seem to end up contributing to the picture rather than spoiling it, I say! At least, that's my experience from looking at drawings! In fact, I'm inclined to think precision isn't a necessary prerequisite for good aesthetics in a piece of art at all, or rarely; that's how I see things, and it's also nice to say because precision is difficult to get to, so dismissing the need for it as a viewer to relieve the bothersome burden from the author is a good thing.

What is written in comments concerning the feel of the drawing is right; it conveys the vibe well! Wanderer's analysis is pretty, too.

If you ask me, I am quite sure you needn't be worried about "technical properness" so much really!

If you ask me, RIMB here looks creepier than your so-called "creepy" self portrait.

I suppose that's a good thing, since this one was actually meant to look creepy!

Well, I guess that's what you get for letting an Anunaki inhabiting your body... :/

Hmm... I've always wondered if you could incorporate more of your art into your games... like maybe for major events or conversations you'd have one of your paintings (is it a painting, I'm really tired) as the backdrop (background?). Sometimes at the end of a game, there is like a slideshow of various pictures about the story, so maybe you could dump some of your art there? ..or not, whatever.

euagh, Mardek's so bony, or at least his cheeks don't seem very... cheek-like. Or maybe that's just me.

Painting like this not only is fun, but the end result looks fun and loose and just brilliant! I love this painting style. I wish I could be a bit more loose with my own painting! ><

Thank you! I'm glad you like it!
I wish I could be LESS loose with this painting style! Or rather, just as quick, but more precise... though I suppose it's all about practice and experience in the end!
Actually, I doubted I'd have any success with this loose painting style until I actually tried it! Have you ever tried something similar yourself?!

It's brill! I love it
Yes, I have tried, but they ALWAYS end up looking confined in the end because I get picky over the details :C
I really want to become a lot looser- or add more life and texture to my brush strokes while keeping detail, like here for example: [link]
I really do love that look It's so alive!

Oh, I love the look of paintings like that! I always wonder how they're done, since they seem like MAGIC to me! I don't know what kind of brush shapes or settings they'd use to get that effect... otherwise I'd try it out myself!

I wonder too! I want to work towards a looser style like that - hopefully my future artworks may start to be a bit more lively and experimental
You don't have to know what brush shapes or settings they use - just play around and find out, you might even find something better

I actually think that the way that you've used light and shadow is very clever. Although Mardek - and Rohoph - are light elemental (and have that perfectly normal and natural eye configuration), Mardek's face is in shadow. That's very telling from a symbolic point of view. Was it honestly not intentional?! Either way, it works, and the dark/light behind them seems to suggest a lot to me. There's just a hint of... disapproval? Haughtiness?... in the features, which obviously makes sense for Rohoph. But it also doesn't seem quite natural, which befits Mardek, who does not have those traits.

Of course, this is just how it comes across to me, but I really think that there's a lot going on *behind the scenes* here.

I think this is an excellent analysis and I'd love to say that I intended all of those things to be the case! So I will say that! I totally intended all of those things! Yes!
I'm glad at least that it could be interpreted in that way!

Something I certainly DID intend was for it to look almost undead, or like an old man in a body that he doesn't belong in, which was meant to create an unsettling effect, like looking at a zombie.

Wow... he looks even more... Light elemental than usual. Is this a reasonable preview for his appearance in the theoretical Chapter 4?

OHMYGAWK, HIS EYES HAVE PUPILS!!1

Also, that's quite a change from what you usually drew when making MARDEK characters portraits indeed. Kinda makes me want to play MARDEK 4, though I can't really do it right now, oh well... ^^'

I didn't actually want the eyes to have pupils - IT'S NOT CANON, UGH - but how else would you show that he's looking at the viewer?! Actually, it might have helped the mood if you couldn't tell where he was looking... but oh well!

WonderlandSunflower In reply to Pseudolonewolf [2013-03-11 18:27:39 +0000 UTC]

Aww, but I like pupils. I mean, they're more... pupil-ey? Pupil-eye?
And besides, it follows the biology, since the light actually ends up somewhere, allowing its reception. Or something. And biological accuracy is very important in games and sure every player cares about technical details of vision, myes!!1!1
