Against the background of growing imperialist sentiments, as well as beliefs about the necessity and justification of expansionism, in the middle of the 19th century, the United States joined the colonial race for Africa. After reaching the Pacific coast, as well as significant territorial gains during the war with Mexico, the states are turning their eyes to the lands beyond the Atlantic.

The American colonization of Africa began in 1847, when, with the active participation of the American Colonization Society, Liberia's attempt to declare its independence was suppressed. As the first colonial state, Liberia has become a springboard for further advancement inland. So, during the years 1850-1880, two more colonial states were founded - Guinea and the Ivory Coast. The United States participates in the Berlin Conference of 1884, which met to discuss the subsequent division of Africa, during which it consolidates its already acquired territories and delineates its borders with other colonial powers - France, Great Britain and Portugal.

In 1917, the United States of America entered World War I on the side of the Entente. Having an interest in expanding its colonies in Africa, at the peace negotiations, as the victorious country, the United States defends the right to alvdet German Togoland (occupied at that time by France and Great Britain). Despite the reluctant approval of the Allies, the demand of the American side was satisfied. After the conclusion of the American-German Peace Treaty in 1920, the territories of Togo became part of the United States as the 4th colonial state.
