Description I haven't submitted much dino art for a while, so I uploaded this depiction of theropod family life that I drew last year; however, I decided to color it this week. The picture portrays a mother troodonid dinosaur removing termites from a mound using a stick, meanwhile her hatchlings eagerly watch with the anticipation of a quick scrumptious snack. The use of a stick prevents soldier termites from attacking the dinosaurs as they chow down on worker nestmates. Since Troodontidae represent perhaps the smartest of cretaceous beasts, I like to believe that some troodons are akin to some clever birds we see today and learned to use tools for finding food.

Hope you like this pic, I experimented a little more with lighting effects.

Enjoy,

Blair

It is perfect. It is cute and has great detail, and I love the thought that the troodon would do this. 10/10

I love both of the ideas communicated in this here thingie.

1) TOOL USING TROODON HELL YEAH

2) Dark/black chicks. They would probably be so vulnerable for their first days of life, so the mom would probably tuck them away in dark corners, between roots and under fern fronds - their black plumage would make them perfect for blending into the surrounding shadows! :0

I LOVE ALL OF THIS!!

What are the chances that Dinosaurs could have had the intelligence of a crow or raven? Are Troodons believed to be really that smart?

I believe that I've heard somewhere that some species of birds actually provoke soldier termites into attacking them because the fluid that they spray will agitate any mites or other parasites that the birds may have.

Love it such cute little chicks. I'm impressed by your imagination using facts. It's quite possible that the troodon was indeed a very intelligent dinosaur, akin to our clever corvids the crows and ravens. So if a raven can use a tool, why not a troodon? Excellent! Also the babies being black, very interesting. The darker color to hide them from predators as they hide in shadows, perhaps?
Such a neat concept!

There might not be any fossil evidence, as far as I know, that Troodontids ever used tools although it's still possible that they had the mental capacity to do so. But still, it's a great concept for a family drawing.
