"No. I pull frightfully annoying Mara out of kids' ears or yank them off their chests so you can pummel them with utter glee. Don't look at me like that. I know you enjoy it. I feel your smile."

"I bet you are... Victims of Mara attacks usually remember them even after their attackers are gone. Depending on what the Mara was... They'll still be afraid of the dark for a period of time... And that's something I can't fix. Life would be a whole lot better for everyone if we could just find a way to stop the creeps from entering rooms altogether."

"We can only hope. I'll be out of a job by then."

"Yes. And I will rule the world.... Someday. Man, I hate this outfit. It's scratchy and smells like Starhead."

Mara: Nightmare Creature

Starhead: a race of lizard-like people, living in the Dream State, whose heads are very... star like.

Doctor: One of the professions within a Studio.

Doctors detect nightmare creatures (commonly known as "Mara") within the vicinity of a sleeper and, with the help of a Dream Agent, deals with it as swiftly and quietly as possible. Doctors train their hands to weave out the dreams from a Sleeper's head. They use very long and nimble fingers to pull out bits affected by Mara in order to dig deeper to get to the creature itself.

Unusually coarse skin on their hands act like friction gloves which help them to get a firm grip on the Mara (who usually prove to be slippery and/or wiggly) they catch. Depending on the nature of the creature (and the skills of the Doctor), it usually take between 2 minutes to half an hour to extract a Mara from the person. The coarse skin also protects Doctors from bites they might sustain from unidentified creatures they encounter while prodding the mind of a Sleeper.

Dream Agent: Dream Agents are trained to capture/arrest/incapacitate/destroy Mara (they work according to how each Studio trains them. Some studios do not allow Agents to use unnecessary force in the field.).

They work closely with Doctors and also act as their bodyguards. Doctors can more or less defend themselves when the situation calls for it. But usually when they are attacked, their senses are focused on the task of extracting Mara, and will not be able to react fast enough to save their own lives. It's always good to have an extra pair of eyes/ears/noses/hands around.

Dream Agents usually work in pairs or small groups (of at most 5). But if resources are stretched, they have to work alone, covering large housing areas by themselves.

Dream Agents also have the task of introducing Dream Creatures (not the harmful ones) into new territories where they will tend to the minds of their designated Sleepers. They make sure the Creatures settle into their environment well.

Dream Agents usually start their rounds just after the sky goes black and end just before Dawn. The time they have in the Real World isn't long, so they have to work quickly and carefully, covering as many of their charges as possible. They also have to avoid detection from people/households that don't seem to sleep at all! Many Agents love this part of the job. It provides excitement and *fun* and gives them a chance to hone their skills wherever they go. Careless Dream Agents end up sparking the public's interest in Aliens and Ghosts... making a big hoo-haa that Sandmen (the Dream Agents' bosses) aren't particularly fond of.

Also, if Agents (or any inhabitants of the Dream State for that matter) are found in the Real World after Dawn... there are severe, and often fatal, consequences. Buuuuut that'll be information for another time. With appropriate pictures attached.
