when using oils, try using bigger strokes.. it will become a lot easier as you use oils more and more, and try layering to portray a smoother finish(instead of showing brush lines). Cool idea though.

Great job with your first! I can't paint to save my life, so I can't comment on that, but it sure looks like a polar bear under water to me! You made the bubbles look real.
