Description Opera House, Sydney.

First successful shot using my new Welders ND Filter, it's around 17 stops!

This was 2 horizontal shots 5min exposures at f8 200 ISO in mid afternoon.

Yea what I do is auto focus without the glass then switch to manual and put it back on, been careful not to move it too much.

Great effect, almost like a painting but still enough detail to tell that its a photo!

This is absolutely amazing! Living in sydney myself I'm alittle tired of shots of the opera house/ harbour bridge.

But this one is fresh and amazing. Really love the vivid colours! HDR?

By welders ND, did you make your own ND using the welders glass?

Thanks Andy.

Yea I followed Davids guide, it was really easy and cheap! It was a single exposure. Tricky to get working though, took me about a week.

Was just reading up on that journal article myself. Where did you buy the glass from? What problems did you encounter along the way?

psyfre In reply to andyjimmy [2010-03-20 04:50:28 +0000 UTC]

Electroweld Welding Supplies in Greenacre. Mine was "130mm x 100mm Shade No. 10 H" but that was the last one in that size.

At first I thought it would of been relatively close to a 10 stop difference so after reading through [link] and figuring out my exposures on the chart I thought I was set. However all my photos were coming out black and I needed drastically longer shutter speeds for the sensor to pick up any light at which point the image quality was terrible. My first shots with decent exposures had lots of noise and light spots, it was as if I was shooting 3200 ISO. I ended up figuring out it was roughly 17 stops for an even exposure, and David mentioned that you need to shade the glass from the sun otherwise you will get light spots. Applying these two things cut out practically all noise and bad quality, but it's still delicate in terms of sun light/reflections.

So helpful to know! Will get "building" during the easter break. Thanks for that link, so helpful too. I was thinking to make one of the exposure charts myself as i'm always just guessing, and someone already has
