Story://

The trip to Matamata was blissfully short, the mere two hour drive a pleasant change for the remote sanctuary. Stretching lazily in her seat, Avalyne grinned at her father- she had been begging to see the newest pen of Kaimanawas for weeks, but if the trailer hitched to their Lincoln was any indication, her grovelling had paid off.

Shuffling hooves and the occasional snort led the young woman to the nearest enclosure, leaving her to marvel at the beautiful assortment of horses. Though as much as she delighted in their banter, Ava did not feel her mind reach out to any one. It only took a few moments for her attention to fall on a far more isolated pasture.

Against the furthest stretch of fence stood perhaps the most vibrant silver bay Avalyne had ever seen. Her light mane, a sharp contrast to the fiery hue of her pelt, was curled gently in the morning dew, framing the star and snip that highlighted her muzzle. Four coronets wound their way above her hooves, staining them pink. She was beautiful.

And yet, it was not the mare’s appearance which drew Ava closer - it was the waves of compassion and kindness which emanated, even above the harsher note of fear. The empath felt her soul entwine with this new being, as if they were long-lost friends.

Mr. Pantoll glanced down as his daughter fell silent, smiling slightly. ”The paperwork was signed before we came. She’s yours.”
