Description A somewhat ambitious double bounce walk cycle I started over a year ago but never finished, loosely based on Graham Specter (Baccano!).

Back in the days before rendered 3D elements became acceptable in animation, animators would often render 3D objects (such as cars, mechs, environments, etc), print the frames and creatively 'trace' over them with pencil. This method saved you from pulling out your hair over perspective accuracy, but still allows for some creative license and imperfections inherent to 2D animation. This method has been largely abandoned now that 3D elements can be more seamlessly integrated with 2D animation, but I find that even when it's done well (and often it is not) it still lacks the aesthetic quality that a human hand manually rendering the frames gives.

So I modeled, animated and rendered a 3D 'guide' with Blender to help with the fisheye-lense perspective, then imported it into Krita where I was going to animate the character and background in a 2D workflow. I gave up due to my drawing ability not keeping up with my vision, but I think sooner or later my drawing skills will be good enough to go back and finish this properly.

That's a really cool technique! Hope you go back and finish it sometime. I think it'll look awesome

I hope to get back to it after I level up my drawing ability a bit more

Haha weeeell It's not exactly up for grabs per say, but I'm happy for people to use it as inspiration.

Maybe when I get back to working on this I'll make a legit tutorial on how to use Blender (or any other 3D program) to make a 3D guide yourself. It's actually pretty simple

Ah, thanks for the clarification. You have some nice intentions with this idea.

No problem! The sudden popularity of this animation just caught me by surprise, but I'm more than happy to spread the knowledge around~

is an interesting solution to animate in 2d

Where did you learn it?

PSYSkip In reply to prayname [2018-11-09 00:45:08 +0000 UTC]

Well... I can't say I really learnt it from anywhere. I did a lot of 3D modelling at uni and always thought that it could be a great way to assist animating complex shots in 2D, and later on found out that 3D tracing was a popular technique at some point.

it may seem simple

but sometimes the more simplest solutions, are the last things we try

thanks for the idea

I love the perspective on this and the animation when the right foot goes towards the viewer is pretty awesome.

Thanks. The right foot might need to be even bigger when it gets close to the camera, but I didn't want it to look too goofy

not an easy angle to draw and even more difficult to animate.

I can imagine that, especially if there was a gang walking behind the main guy.
