Be Like That Boy

I was walking down the street
In bustling New York City
When an old man on the curb
Called out to me
He said “Hey, sonny,
Let me give you some advice.
I bet you don’t realize
Your life is pretty nice.
When you get the chance,
Think of those like me
And appreciate the chance you have
And be what you want to be.”
That really got me thinking
And when I’d solved his rhyme
I thought I’d give him something
For him using his time
To help me and to show me what
I’d never seen before
And now that I ponder it hard
I see opportunities galore
So I stepped a little closer
I gave him a couple bucks
And said “Thank you, mister
I wish you the best of luck.”
And with that I smiled
And turned to leave, face aglow
This man had taught me value
That I didn’t know
And once you’ve read this poem
That man will say to you
“If you want to be someone
Then be like that boy, too.”
