That is right. The much talked and view event in the history of Star Trek Constellation vs the Doomsday weapon or planet killer to some.
The story goes Constellation, noticed a solar system being destroyed and went to investigate. Commodore Decker in command of the Constellation went to take a look...
...Long story short Constellation got it's ass kicked, and as for Commodore Decker he first allowed his crew to abandon the ship that still had life support plus put them on a planet with the planet Killer decided to have a takeout and destroy it.
Even Captain Kirk said why abandon a ship with full life support, the crew should of waited for rescue. When rescue came in the form of the Enterprise guess what Decker did, he take control of the ship and almost destroyed the Enterprise, Constellation thanks to Scotty, had be repaired and could help but this soon to be too much.
Worst was to fellow, Decker stole a shuttle and flew into the Doomsday weapon, his death gave the crew a answer that they needed to defeat the weapon. So with the help of Scotty, they rigged the Constellation engines to blow inside the planet killer it worked the killer was dead but not destroyed?

It is a good episode and i plan to leave it a lone you think Star trek Constellation is going to rewrite history it's not, but what about the aftermath...

I bet you can guess what Starfleets view was on all of this. Starfleet was angry for a start Decker should of not engaged the Planet killer and should of told Starfleet.
Then abandoning his crew and going nuts was not a good image, plus a Doomsday weapon that was not destroyed this was a headache. Plus one of there top starships destroyed!
Starfleet had new problems if word got out about this it might damage Starfleet because it failed to stop a weapon, a weapon that could destroy worlds.
So Starfleet decided to do the only thing and what they did was a cover up. Fist bring the Enterprise home now!
Once there alter the logs and force the crew that they towed the Constellation back.
Then tell the crew of the Enterprise that there was no doomsday weapon and if words leaks out the Enterprise will be destroyed and replaced. Kirk had to change his story.
As for the family of the original Constellation they would had to of being payed out. With the simply facts Constellation had being in a fight.
With that done Starfleet had to get a ship to replace Constellation so at the Iowa Shipyards a yet to name Lexington the same design as the (late Constellation) was taken mid way through her build and was rename Constellation and ID the some number as the old ship then replaced with a new crew.
Starfleet had did it, the only thing left was to send the Enterprise into deep space, far away really far way.
Pretend events never took place and everyone will be happy. But it was not, a starship was sent to checkout the Doomsday weapon which disappeared (including a few more planets) But worst was to come, rumours began to surface a switch had taken place. Crews and workers started noticing that Constellation felt new, very new for it's age. Plus the workers who worked on the Lexington weren't happy because that the ship disappeared (which Starfleet claimed what ship?) Then talk surface about a weapon that can destroyed planets.
Starfleet once again had to stop theses rumours big time, so they did some with there lives.
But then the replacement Constellation suffered a problem a faulty sensor picked up a radiation leak ( which was not really there) the new crew abandon her in fear of this.
So Constellation spent 3 months in space empty until she was found by a T.W Striker and a small landing party. Striker and the landing party discovered the faulty sensor and took the ship back to Earth.
Starfleet was glad to see that ship come back. (Which i think they weren't) so instead of paying the Striker and his landing party off they decided to give him the ship and let him command it.
Starfleet allowed Striker to make changes to the ship as long as it and him keep out of the way. So with a small crew of 400 This Constellation was put into service.
To this day, rumours still surrounding the Constellation plus the Doomsday weapon with the question will this happen again...
