Description                 Joe Marie Rennet was always picked last. From childhood through her teenage years and all the way up to her adulthood, she was always the last person with her back to the wall. Sure, she was athletic. Sure, she didn’t mind taking orders from team captains. And, sure, she was even easy on the eyes. But it was something about Joe that made onlookers become over-lookers, and, although this may make most uneasy, quite simply, she didn’t mind it one bit.
So when she was picked to be a member for an notorious pirate spaceship, it didn’t surprise her as much as it should have.
“Hi,” she muttered as she passed one of her crewmates, her big brown eyes cast down. The person she passed, known as the navigator, watched with curious eyes. Joe, despite how her outrageous hairdo would deceive a stranger into believing she was someone rebellious and ‘out there’, was awfully silent and aloof around other people. For a second the navigator was left wondering if he just had bad breath or if he had something growing out of his nose and everyone except Joe was playing a cruel joke on him. Or perhaps she wasn’t a people person. Deciding on the latter, he turned his heels and continued on his way, knowing that one day she’ll open up to him.
That was many years ago, and the navigator came to a delightful revelation that he was, in fact, correct. His breath did smell a bit....fishy. And he wished now more than ever that he could somehow change his breath for this blonde bob-cut woman. But even thirty-year old airship navigators know how hard it is to worry about personal hygiene when they have an entire ship to direct and make sure it doesn’t run into a mountain. What a job.
As the navigator sat alone in his dimly lit room, Joe was leaning against the ship’s rail. The night was dark, and only a few stars were out. Not that it mattered; the airship spewed so much exhaust that it was nearly impossible to even see a few feet in front of the ship, and the dome around the spaceship was thick and difficult to see through without any obscenities. It didn’t really matter anyway, Joe in fact hated being out in the deck. The smothering smoke made her eyes burn and her throat dry. Tonight, however, she needed time to think.
Her ship, the Selene, was modest. She flew high, she flew fast, and she flew well. It was the captain, Samuel, who held everything together. He was tall, charismatic, and a fast talker. He also had a knack for getting both in and out of trouble, and he absolutely needed that uncanny ability right now.
Their sister ship, Columbus, was supposedly running low on weapons and food, and just yesterday they were asking Selene for assistance. Samuel accepted a visit- on the condition that Joe and Isaac snuck inside without the knowledge of the crew. “Now I’m not saying that the captain of the Columbus is a liar, but he has been known to…leave out parts of the truth. I want the Weapons Master and Technician to sneak in there and see if he is giving us the big picture or if we’re just getting a tiny piece of a really big jigsaw puzzle. Understand?” The way Captain Samuel Jutnik talked fascinated Joe Marie.
“We’ve got to be quiet,” Isaac softly whispered.
                “What?”
Isaac, whom normally has a soft voice even when trying to yell, became utterly incoherent to Joe’s untrained ears. He awkwardly leaned forward, an inch from her face, and repeated, “We’ve got to be quiet!”
Joe nodded and gave him a weak grin.
                “Okay,” she breathed.
Isaac paused, as if he was unsure of what exactly he should do next. He already halfheartedly got over the hurtle of talking to a woman, and he now had to take on the daunting task of figuring out what to do. Joe suppressed any emotion of annoyance and attempted to replace it with understanding, but it was hard to do when it would have been better just not saying anything instead of saying something to get the point across to not say anything at all. Living with her crewmates was awfully exhausting.
