Description Well, I'm embarking on a project to do a whole tarot deck. Probably won't be done for a couple of years because I have to do commissions and paying jobs. If my attention span can handle it, this will be my project to do in between all that stuff.

So, that said, here is #0: The Fool

She's a bit different from the standard depiction, but it's still about new beginnings, and embarking into the unknown.

And for prints: [link]
Oh yeah, and for anyone interested, here's the pencil sketch that led up to the finished painting: [link]

She's beautiful, gorgeous the way the birds are almost an extension of her - love the monkeys in the cliff holding the tales of others.

I see her as a person who is not afraid of the unknown...clearly she has the whole world's support and she probably knows this.

I read a book about birthdays once that told me that the Fool was my tarot card, and since then, I have always had a deep appreciation of the Fool in art and literature.

But this image has taken my breath away. I have been a fan of your for such a long time, I don't know how this escaped me. It is whimsical, but with a deep-rooted sense of meaning. And the art, as always, is exquisite.

I am very much looking forward to seeing the finished deck!

You know, this card is one of the main reasons I'm going to buy this deck one day. It will be the first thing I love so that I'm ready to pay for the shipment and all, despite the fact I like reversed symbols and elements when it comes to swords and wands (for me, swords=fire, wands=air).

This card alone fits for me so well I can't even explain. It's like you painted it for my soul There are other wonderful cards, but this one was the first and I still love it.

Someone sent me to see you work when they saw that I was working on a deck of Tarot. I have a lot of work still to do on mine, and it is photo based, I am still shooting for it.
I really love yours. I have quite a collection of artists tarot decks I have collected over the last 30 years. I hope to have one of yours when you finish it.
Best wishes and much success!

Unfortunately, my english-knowledges are too small to express what I really think and feel, if I watch your works... Often, I visit shadowscapes, and everytime I feel better than before... Thanks for your wonderful pictures, I admire them very much! I have to write down some words in my mother language, maybe you learned german...who knows?

I would feel bad about posting my poorly drawn tarot cards and then know that these are hangin' around the site *blushes*

Anyways, it's a very complex and amazing work you got there! I'm sure to check the other cards (spcially "Temperance" that's one of my favorites!)

What a lovely picture. I like the delicacy of the colors (is this a water color or acryllic or...?) and the composition. The shape of the monkey-pillar makes a nice platform for the pose of the fool - it's a continual line, but broken up enough that it's balanced and tapered without looking too slick. Those are some terrific details - I especially like the birds pulling on the ribbons (it makes me wonder if they're trying to hold her back or if they think they're supporting her upcoming "flight") and the addition of the fox. (I'm guessing you used the fox because of its tendency to be seen as trickster god in many mythologies. Or maybe you really like foxes. Either way, the little guy looks great there. I like how the fox seems to be a little concerned with what's happening, but not panicky)

One last symbolism question - are the three monkeys in the pillar a tribute to the hear no evil/see no evil/speak no evil monkeys?

I do hope you continue with the tarot series. As soon as I'm done this comment, I'm going to browse your gallery to see if there are any more!

puimun In reply to SylvF [2006-08-04 07:11:53 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much! It is in watercolors. As for the monkeys...it was not intentionally so when I first drew it but it kinda became like that. The symbols they are each holding are for the Heart, the Mind, the Soul. And yes, it's an ongoing project, see my "Tarot!" journal entry linked in the description.
