does this story happen to have anything in common with the tale of - if memory serves - the Chinese emperor's nightingale? (it was about how a caged nightingale could not sing because it missed its freedom, so the emperor ordered a clockwork nightingale to be made... sadly, I don't remember the rest very well )

Since you ask... as it happens, this is the second story I've written involving my clockwork bird. The first one, The Mechanical Aviary of Emperor Jalal-ud-din Muhammad Akbar, actually *does* have a link to the HCA Nightingale story. Sort of.

It does not, however, have Stephanie's art, 'cause it's coming out in Shimmer's "Clockwork Jungle" special volume, and Shimmer is a small zine.
