This piece was commissioned by a lady for her tattoo. The text at the bottom reads "bona na croin" which means neither collar nor crown.Size: 6.5x6.5 inches

I dont know anything about latin, but doesnt bona na croin mean 'better without a crown'? Because there is no word for collar in the sentence? Ach, I dunno xD.

i know this is 2 years to late, but the phrase is irish, but i have some bad news. The Irish is all wrong! It actually makes no sense at all!
BΓ³na ( note the Γ³ which is very important) does in fact mean collar, but it refers to a shirts collar.
the correct word for a collar about your neck is coilΓ©ir.
na should be nΓ‘ as unfortunatly na is a totally different word.
corΓ³in is a crown
crΓ³in. So sadly is actually all messed up and isnt actually irish at all. An irish person wouldnt understand that. Very sorry.
the correct phrases should be:
Gan coilΓ©ir is gan corΓ³in.
or even,
Gan CoilΓ©ir , gan corΓ³in.
Maybe you shouldnt tell your client that you tattooed a load of gibberish on her back though

Okay...this is really too wierd, but I have a celtic wolf tattoo that has the broken collar and cracked crown under his paw- the saying is not part of the actuall tattoo but it what the picture means. What an odd coincidence! And I love this piece!!!!!

I've always been too chicken to get a tattoo, but if I was assured of having something unique and yet so lovely for the body art, I'd seriously consider it.
One thing, though... the motto is "neither collar nor crown", but the fox is wearing the collar?

it's stunning. It has something of the Book of Kells about it. and the fox has particularly pictish elements with the curls on it's coat at the joints. It's a really nice design.
