Description Librarian in Terminator Armor, 2nd HQ choice for my Grey Knights 40k army I'm working on at the moment.

Nemesis Warding Staff FTW! Gotta love those 2+ armor and 2+ invulnerable saves.

Never before have I known so many people complain about a single codex before :/ At my local club, Grey knights are about as unpopular as they get so I hope you don't face that once you finish your army! Anyways, This is brilliant, is it all NMM? great detail on the face and the robe is awesome

Punk-Noir In reply to Kaos-chosen [2012-03-24 15:57:48 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I don't worry about that. I mainly plan to play a friend of mine at his or my place. And eventually head out to a GW store every now and then.

But the whining about how "good" GK actually are is silly. Yes, they're good, but they're only half as good if you bring a decent list to face them. Just like any other game, if you bring a good mix of weapons in your list, I don't think you should really have a problem playing them and it should make up for fun games. I've heard people complain about Necrons now already, and when the next 40k army gets a new codex people will complain about that as well. Fact is, armies don't get a new codex all at the same time, so some armies are more unbalanced against others for a while. Especially if you're stubborn and refuse to change your armylist around to adapt to new armies/rules. Add in that some armies are more unbalanced in the current rules. The next core rules (6th edition) are rumoured to be out somewhere this year, so perhaps GK (as well as Necrons) are already made with that in mind.

And if I really have a lot of people whining; on the sideline I'm working on a terminator only Dark angels list as well (so practically Deathwing; first model in progress now, pics up somewhere this week). I'd be truely disappointed in the 40k playerbase if they'd complain about each and every army that has a low model count for the sake of being a bit "on a budget".

I didn't do any NMM on it. Sorry to disappoint I just went for grey instead of silver for the armor basecolor. The details are all metallic paints (on top of a shaded down foundation paint basecoat). As stated earlier in a comment, I think I'm bad at faces, so I was thinking about putting a helmet there. But sometimes I just have to try things out. As for the robe; I like blending robes and capes a lot, so that might help a bit making it fun to paint.

Thanks anyway

I think people are designed to complain about something when their losing, as it shifts the blame to something else haha.

It's still looks great, even if it isn't NMM I've helmeted all my Grey knights because I can't stand painting the faces

Punk-Noir In reply to Kaos-chosen [2012-03-26 15:24:38 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, people complain about something anyway. It's hilarious if you play people with the same army and they're complaining about how YOUR army is broken en overpowered. "Dude, you're playing the same army" and they end up comparing armylists to see what kind of "broken" unit you have which they haven't... fact is "you're playing bad" XD

Oh, I helmeted them all as well. Even Draigo. But the librarian doesn't come with a seperate head, so I'd had to cut it out and mess up the model significantly. Besides; the terminator armor he wears is different then the one the Grey knights have. So I opted to let this one pass and try some flestones, heh. It's not that I hate painting faces, but a horrible job on the face really breaks down the rest of the paintjob. But on a big figure (terminator armor would be that) the face is only a fraction of what you see, lol

I've never had people complain about their own codex being overpowered...that's definitely a new one!
I have helmeted draigo because I thought he needed to look even more badass [link] If I ever get a proper librarian (I have a stand in calgar conversion) then he'll just look out of place! (I have a few spare paladin heads... we'll have to see)

Oh... I've heard weird things for people to rage over XD

Heh.. good luck with making that look good. I think you could rather build one out of GK bits instead cause they already have a psychic hood going on, and thus might make him more in line with he rest that way.

Maybe, that's a good idea! At the moment, I don't have a space for a librarian (with Draigo and Crowe brutally leading my forces in combat), crowe not so much as he can't join squads but nobody wants to fire at him for some reason so he just runs around the board by myself xD

Punk-Noir In reply to Kaos-chosen [2012-03-28 23:36:44 +0000 UTC]

Heh... yeah, I was thinking about making one myself, but I like the model I have now a lot... and it was fun to paint (even though that was only 5 hours of fun or so )

Crowe; looked through his entry just now, looks alright, but I don't see why people dont want to fire at him. Still a killpoint, lol

If he didn't have that blade, he'd be an independent character, have a 3+ inv and would be one of the best characters there is in my opinion...but no, he carries the frickin blade... :/

I mainly seem to play objectives so they won't fire at him because he's not as looming as the two dreadknights on the field In the last five games, I think he may only have killed one or two people. The only reason I take him is for the pure brilliance of having purifiers as the bulk of my army Free incinerators, whats not to like?

Punk-Noir In reply to Kaos-chosen [2012-03-29 22:54:53 +0000 UTC]

Well, still a 4+ for sillyness sake, give him a staff instead of a blade already, lol.. 2+ invul save

Dreadnights soak up some fire, lol.

Well, the reason I field Draigo is because I like to have a lot of multiple wound, low save, forceweapon toting psycannons on the board

Kaos-chosen In reply to Punk-Noir [2012-03-29 23:19:54 +0000 UTC]

lol, I field draigo because he is the ultimate badass space marine. After a battle at my local club, sometimes we do small character fights 1v1 just to see what happens. The score so far is 13 wins, 0 losses to Draigo That list includes librarian dreadnoughts, Logan Grimnar (several times), eldar and almost every Captain in the space marine codex. Fielding him is just a Joy

Don't think they're overpowered. Yes, they have some really silly rules going on, but looking at other armies, you can bring a lot of nasty stuff with them as well. Grey knights just look more obvious like that... on paper.

A paladin list sports powerful models/squads, but also a low model count. Horde armies love those lists and I think some kind of high armor tank spam lists would like it as well.

lol yeah i have a squad of paladins, but they didnt get a chance to join in the ass kicking of friends chaos, i had a stormraven that proceded to land right in the middle of his army, and a dreadknight that teleport shunted into his army XD

Punk-Noir In reply to cosmo4545 [2012-03-24 09:51:14 +0000 UTC]

The dreadknight is such an awesome model. I'll probably get at least one of those so I can alternate my list a bit and make it less Draigo/paladin oriented. Though I can reckon facing a Knight with teleporter ain't a walk in the park either.

Nice! I love using the Librarian, my usual setup:
M.C. Nemesis Force Halberd, 3 servo-skulls, Mastery 3 with psyker powers: Warp rift, might of titan, sanctuary, and the shrouding.
Played an Eldar player yesterday, and the psychic hood cancelled out over 10 powers.

Isn't that different on how I want to run him.

Have those servo-skulls helped you a lot? Still not sure if I should go through the hassle and model those, lol

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TheCommissarFangirl In reply to Punk-Noir [2012-03-23 01:41:12 +0000 UTC]

I use markers to depict them. They're worth it if you are facing an army who likes to scout and/or infiltrate. (enemy units cannot scout or infiltrate within 12" of a servo skull, which is very useful) I faced a blood angels player who loved to gun his baal predators and flame my guys on the first turn... but when my servo skulls were crowding his deployment zone I screwed his plans up.

how do you run your Grand master if you use one?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Punk-Noir In reply to TheCommissarFangirl [2012-03-23 01:57:06 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I'm aware of the rules, and I kinda have them lined up in an armylist. I'll probably model a few on small roundbases... that is, if they're worthwhile. I'll gonna face marines a lot (friend just got in the hobby) so there'll be scouts, heh.

If I were to field a GM, I'd probably go with a Halberd and Orbital Strike Relay... perhaps more skulls (depending on what you're facing). On paper the relay looks pretty sweet. I'd probably hold the GM back and fire from the Relay. The halberd is there "just in case". Having initiative 7 is way ahead most models you'll encounter and engage in combat. But I never fielded a GM, so it's more of a "what if" question.

TheCommissarFangirl In reply to Punk-Noir [2012-03-23 05:34:11 +0000 UTC]

ow I run a GM: Halberd, Psycannon, Psychotrope (ALWAYS take this) and blind grenades, etc.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Punk-Noir In reply to TheCommissarFangirl [2012-03-23 08:05:54 +0000 UTC]

Psycannon sounds good. Might try that out someday. If I ever feel the need to buy more psycannons on ebay. Recently bought 4 on ebay as single bits... that's where it got pricey, lol

I can see how psychotropes are a good option though, heh.

Heh, thanks ^^

I usually avoid faces like the plague because I'm bad at doing fleshtones and minor highlighting. At some point I was thinking to convert the face into a helmeted one even. Glad you like it though.

Braeus In reply to Punk-Noir [2012-03-22 11:24:19 +0000 UTC]

For faces I just use Elf Flesh with a Dwarf Flesh wash for the recesses. Looks crummy up close but from the tabletop nobody notices!

Punk-Noir In reply to Braeus [2012-03-22 14:05:43 +0000 UTC]

Well, to be honest, I just messed around a bit with the colors.

Did a Talarn Flesh basecoat, Badab black wash, then I tried the elf flesh highlight method, but that was way to bright, so I toned that down with several coats of Talarn flesh + water. A final small highlight was done by adding a bit of Elf flesh with Talarn flesh.

Yes I love my foundation paints

GW/Citadel should be releasing their new paint range soon. Aparrently their range will double with all new washes, highlights and base colours.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Punk-Noir In reply to Braeus [2012-03-22 14:40:52 +0000 UTC]

Yeah... though most of them will stay, just under a new name (or so I've heard). But apparently this weekend GW stores will have more information there. And probably their website over the weekend.

I've bought my first ever Vallejo paint today, to try it out, they're usually good substitutes for GW colors.

But the thing I wonder about most, is how much the new paintset is gonna go for. I remember them having those (with the current range) at around X-mas, and they were already pretty steep in price (still, it was cheaper than buying everything seperate, but I can't afford 200+ bucks on paints in one go).

A word can be said about paints of GW, some paints are weird. Some are pretty smooth, some are too watery. Still I always stress that people should thin their paints, but there's no universal way to thin GW paint. I hope they kinda fixed that now and all paints (of a single range) are equally consistent.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Braeus In reply to Punk-Noir [2012-03-22 15:06:42 +0000 UTC]

I've heard a lot of people say they use Vallejo paints for GW minatures. Are they cheaper? If so, I might check out my local hobby stores to see if they stock them.

And I always water down my paints. They just spread more evenly and, of course, last longer.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Punk-Noir In reply to Braeus [2012-03-22 15:29:09 +0000 UTC]

I paid less for Vallejo. About 50 cents a pot (which is still between 50 to 60 cents in your currency). The upside also is that Vallejo has more in their "jars". GW is 12 ml, Vallejo is 17 ml. And I feel they have a better way of making good mixtures cause they have bottles instead of jars with a small dropper on the tip. Less messy brushes. The downside obviously is availabilty. The reason I 'm trying them out is cause a local hobbystore (the only one in my city) just opened and stocks Vallejo.

But I see you're from Australia... from what I've heard GW prices are pretty insane there anyway.

Braeus In reply to Punk-Noir [2012-03-22 16:21:42 +0000 UTC]

Insane is an understatement. We pay roughly double what UK/US customers do. I'll definately check out those Vallejo paints.
