Nora looked around the room for a minute; she was still a bit fuzzy from her vision.
How could I be an angel? This weird power of mine Just started recently, why didn’t anything happen right after I went blind? Do I have to die?
“Nora, are you sure you’re okay?” Simon asked worriedly.
“Maybe I just need some rest, I’m kinda dizzy.”
Leila, now fully recovered, finally spoke, “Feel free to spend the night my dears, I’ve plenty of space,” she smiled.
“Oh no, we couldn’t, not after what just happened,” Nora said.
“Nonsense, Chris, would you be so kind as to escort our friends to our guest rooms?”
Chris nodded and jerked his head toward a hall Simon was sure wasn’t there before.
Simon took hold of Nora’s hand and led her down the hall.
Chris opened a door on the left of the hall, “Here, there’s this room, then the one right across the hall. Leila and I sleep at the end of the hall.”
They sleep together? Nora thought.
“Thank you Chris,” Simon said.
“Eh, no problem, anything for a friend. I’m gonna go talk to Leila, you two can get settled in,” with that, Chris started down the hall back where they came from.
Simon led Nora into the room, she felt around the floor with her cane, trying to see where everything was. The thought of Chris and Leila came into his mind, Should I ask him? She finally worked up the nerve to ask, “Um, Simon?”
He looked at her as if he’d been pulled out of a daze and didn’t know what she was saying, but reality caught up with him and he replied, “Yes?”
“Uh, do Chris and Leila…are they, you know.”
A puzzled look was on his face for a second, and then he understood, “Oh, um…I don’t know. They’ve been together for a long time, so maybe they developed some feelings. Honestly I’m not sure, maybe it’s completely innocent.”
Nora blushed, “Oh, okay. I was just wondering, they’re very close,” come to think of it, the way he reacted after we were pulled out of our trances, it was like he was scared for her life. She thought to herself, then she remembered how Simon risked his life to save her from the wolves, then the other vampire and began to blush a little harder.
“Are you okay?”
Simon’s voice broke her out of her train of thought and she snapped out of it. “Um, yes I’m fine, just tired.”
He nodded, “Well, I’ll let you sleep then, good night Nora,” he turned to walk out the door.
“S-Simon?” she said.
“Hmm?” he looked at her.
“Um, thank you.”
“For what?”
“I never thanked you for saving me, or for all you’re doing now so, thank you.”
He looked at her a moment, then said, “No thanks needed Nora,” he smiled a charming smile.
Nora quickly looked down to hide another shade of red, it was then that she noticed her clothing, “Oh…I don’t have a nightgown or anything,” her clothes were stained with blood and caked with dirt from the forest.
“I’ll go ask Leila if she has any old clothing she can lend you.”
“Thank you,” she managed a smile at him.
A look of shock was on his face, then he turned and walked out.
I must have been imagining things, for a sec I thought I saw Simon blushing. Nora thought.
“Hmm, I think the bathroom was this way,” she moved her cane around and found a door, it was a surprisingly big bathroom, the tub was already full and she found a towel hanging on a rail, “Did she know I’d want a bath?” she shook her head and shrugged, so many strange and surreal things were happening that she didn’t even care anymore, nothing shocked her. Shutting the door behind her, knowing Simon was coming back, she began to undress, and then she climbed into the tub. The water was perfect, sighing peacefully, she laid down and relaxed. Hmm, if Simon was blushing, then…what was he thinking? I’m nothing but a burden, I’ve been nothing but a burden since we met. She sighed, then felt a strange sad, sick feeling in her, she was going to die…she was going to leave Simon, probably forever and she didn’t know what to do. Why did she care? Why did he make her blush so profoundly, just by smiling?
A knocking at the door made her jump.
“Nora? Leila found some old clothing that might fit,” it was Simon.
“Um, just a second!” she felt around for the towel and got out of the tub. She walked carefully to the door and opened it a little.
Simon saw her, standing there with nothing but a towel, “Oh, I’m so sorry, I didn’t…uh, here,” he walked toward the door with his face turned away and handed her the gown she got from Leila.
“Thank you,” she took it and shut the door, the towel slid off and she pulled the gown over her head. It was frilly, there were no sleeves, just straps and it went down to her knees. She smoothed it out and stepped out of the bathroom. Simon was still there, apparently waiting with more outfits from Leila.
He looked at her and didn’t know what to say. She looked cute.
She felt self-conscious, Simon looked like he’d just seen some phantasmal specter in front of him, then a light blush appeared on his face. She gasped slightly and their eyes met.
He slowly stood up from the bed and walked toward her cautiously. His eyes never left hers as he crossed the room to where she was standing, he was taller than her so she had to look up at him. He lifted a hand to her face and pulled it back. He was being careful.
It must have been an eternity, but they stood there, staring into each other’s eyes, searching them for a sign.
Simon slowly began to lean in, tilting his head, his lips slightly parted.
Nora couldn’t think, she just tilted her head and closed her eyes.
