Reminds me of a fairy tale.... a bit of a bittersweet one. Perhaps something Charles De Lint would write.... Lovely.

I always think the best fairy tales are the bittersweet ones.

Thank you! And yes, on cotton. Generally high quality watercolour paper is either pressed wood pulp or cotton (sometimes also called 'rag'). They have different qualities and deal with paint and water differently. In short, paper dries faster and tends to leave pigment pooled on top, which means you sometimes get more 'watery' effects of mixed pigments separating or creating accidental patterns, and tends to be easier to rework if you make mistakes. Cotton stays wetter longer and soaks the pigment in, so it gives smoother washes and won't bleed as much if re-wet, but is a lot harder to rework.

Oh! thank you so so much for explaining that. I am only just begining to experiment with watercolor and I love it but feel lost most of the time. When I see art like this I can see the potential for the medium and it makes me want to try harder. Thank you again!

No problems at all. Watercolour (actually, painting in general) can all be pretty daunting to begin with. Even now I only know a tiny fraction of what I could know in terms of pigments, brushes and paper, but as I learn more I'm always happy to share with anyone who asks!
