Ok so you have more than a hundred comments, but I still want to add: how amazing all the background work you must've done, integrating here monsters from different cultures and even "current" ones like la Santa Muerte!! (she's very "in" right now)

Thanks a lot - I'm glad you like it.

Is she!? But that was none of the criteria why I putted her in ... And somehow dead is alway in ... isn't it!?

TeresaClark In reply to Puttbill [2009-03-05 19:49:05 +0000 UTC]

Death is always in, but this figure, La Santa (a she) is kind of a pagan "saint" first adored by narcs, prostitutes, people in jail, i.e. peole who think they are already doomed and find no comfort or salvation in any Christian image. Her temple is in Tepito, a neighborhood which is heavy with informal market of stolen/piracy goods and (in)famous for the violence there.

So they adore it like a Christian saint and in Dia de Muertos (a couple of days after Halloween) they do ceremonies like masses for its adoration, even change her clothes (as many do with images of baby Jesus), they call it "La niΓ±a" (the child) and they do peregrinations with the image. I actually saw a full size image of it in downtown Mexico City. Heavy metal stuff

I've been to Mexico myself ... so I stuck deep into this influence myself ... I did a book about the DΓa de Muertos - "Polvo - Day of the Dead" and I'm looking forward to get it publish this summer.

wow, imagine that... did you investigate as much for the other monsters? I noticed some of them from art history, others I didnΒ΄t know from asian or european cultures. ThatΒ΄s liking monsters a lot ΒΏor are you a walking encyclopedia? just kidding, I wish I knew that much

Can I ask - where'd you draw your inspiration from the top half of the drawing, devoid of monsters? Without the shape and arrangement of the monsters themselves to drive the composition (and you even managed to avoid putting one random monster at the top somewhere, like a lot of artists would in compositions like this), the top clearly had to survive on its own.

Fabulous, unbelievable detail. Seeing each of the monsters is almost like an adventure on its own, with what most of them are doing something odd. Most surely a favorite from me.
