Everything about that background is just awesome!
It ties in the colours of the two horses, and I love the bit of brown in the grass!
I'm gonna have to play around with my bbs and see if I can improve....

I just pick a color lighter than the mane/tail's base color then make tiny brush strokes where ever I feel they should be to get a shine effect. I shade in hair strands under it first though
