I totally agree! Near is a wuss. But Near is also very smart... And if Mello didn't have that inferiority complex of his, he'd still be alive.
Apparently the author of Death Note didn't plan for him to die. Ohba-san thought that he should be the one to catch Kira, just to add a little twist. BUUUT... At least he and Matt went out with a bang. :3 That's much better than fading away.

You are indeed correct. But L always knew that Light was Kira... he just didn't have sufficient evidence to prove it. Besides, L was at a great disadvantage-- He didn't know about the Death Note. However, he suspected that it was something supernatural. He's so awesome ^3^
