In my take, the crystals on Xenophanes are actually reaped souls, growing through his quills to protect him and give himself more offensive options (not that he needs it)

The crystals are fatal to the touch, one cut and you're dead. When broken, they release the tormented soul and it proceeds to attack anyone it comes across in self defense, making yet another hazard.
