Description Well, more like Janus cut in half. I didn't consider the other half of this acrylic and gouache work worthy of a scan. Rest assured, though, this character did have the traditional two heads to begin with. The story behind this creation is long and a little gruesome, so I'll explain it as briefly as possible and with all the gory details removed.

This image was a prep painting for a sculpture I made for an A-level art module. The topic I chose to look at was the use and abuse of animals in art, where I primarily examined George Stubbs and Damien Hirst. At the most basic level, my essays on these artists concluded in the decision to create something which mixed the disturbing yet fascinating practice of animal anatomy with a far deeper metaphysical intention. Hence I decided to depict the god of doorways, Janus, with a salmon head (salmon being short-lived fish where the entrance into the world represented by birth and the exit from it in the form of death are closely juxtaposed). There's a lot more to it than that, and I have saved you from looking at the yucky and less refined half of the painting. Still, the background's not particularly great here...

Oh, and Janus is grasping a key, which being the god of doorways, he is often portrayed holding.

Hey, this is cool. I don't know the story of Janus, but because of this picture I'd like to look it up. I'd also like to learn more about these artists you've mentioned. I'm sorry to say I've never heard of them.

I really like how the head looks with the body. I would imagine it'd be hard to have a fish head on an upright body without a neck. Even that would look strange if a person wasn't careful. I'm also interested to see what the other half of this painting looks like. I know you said it's not as nice as this part, but I'd like to see how the whole composition looks together.

Well, Hirst is a Brit artist pretty infamous for putting various animal corpses - including cows, sharks, sheep and pigs - in formaldehyde. Stubbs I'm surprised you haven't heard of - he painted horses, mainly. Brilliant horses.

Yeah, it was a weird piece to put together. The other half really IS dire. It basically involves another salmon head, this time with the skin stripped off. And yes, I did have a real model to work from.

An interesting concept...you really looked into the artists, and the whole philosophy behind Janus too...I liked how you connected the head of the fish to the 'opening of a new door' This is cool shit in my opinion! Yzzz-eeah!

BTW, check out my new Deviation!!! I just uploaded it two point three minute ago!!!
