Description
I decided I needed to do this after a short comment exchange with
Shortly after the news of the shooting started hitting the internet and television, the most infuriating question of all started to be parroted by the different news outlets: "Will this have a chilling effect on other satirical and critical publications?" What sort of BS is this? That's exactly what the terrorists want! They want to scare everyone from ever drawing another cartoon of Muhammad. Terrorists don't have the numbers or means to directly confront the state and win, so they want to instil an amount of fear on a large population that is completely disproportionate to the small number of terrorists causing the problem. It's a strategy to get their way while still lacking the physical means to force their will. The worst thing is that it works if we let it - if we allow ourselves to be terrorized. Every bomb that goes off, every AK-47 that kills another civilian, usually signals another notch of infringement on our rights... because we allow it. The only way to deal with terrorism is to stop living in terror and show them how meaningless and ineffective their barbaric gestures are.
I don't want to trivialize the tragedy for the families involved, but to put things in context, the number of deaths caused by terrorism is a drop in the ocean compared to the number of deaths caused by smoking, or by heart attack because people eat junk and don't exercise, or by accidents caused by drinking. And yet, people keep smoking, drinking, and eating junk with impunity. In fact, according to the world health organization, which keeps global statistics on deaths per year, you are thousands of times more likely to die from one of the aforementioned causes than by terrorism. And because close to one third of all global deaths related to terrorism occurred in Iraq alone, if you don't live in Iraq, your chances are astronomically smaller! I'm willing to bet that more people die each year from sex (either while "on the saddle" or after the fact from VD complications) than die from terrorist attacks, and I guarantee you that people are in no rush to avoid sex. It's time to stop giving in to these ignorant asshats, and stop being afraid. That's the only way we'll prevail against them, and the only way we'll stop the attrition of our rights.
The freedom of expression is far too precious to lose. You might not agree with Charlie Hebdo's messages, but that's the whole point of the freedom of expression: people's right to express their beliefs peacefully is inviolable, even if some don't like it. The editors and cartoonists in Charlie were threatened multiple times, their offices burned, and yet they refused to give in to the terrormongers. They died using and defending the rights that we take for granted. They refused to be silent and were not afraid. For their deaths to mean anything, that should be the true lesson for the rest of us. Deeply critical discussion is the only thing that curbs the worst and most barbaric aspects of fanatical religion. The world needs more comics of Muhammad, not less.

Well, I thought about writing something more somber, but I thought that maybe the Charlie guys would have appreciated the humor as a tribute.
Glad you liked it.

A dozen people were murdered by barbaric fools for drawing cartoons. I happen to care about that, and so do a lot of people.
Freedom of expression means that people can openly critique and discuss whatever they want without being persecuted by the state or those in power. It doesn't mean everyone has to constantly talk about your particular pet grievances and nothing else.
And who says the CIA doesn't get criticized? They've been criticized heavily over the last decade, by news organizations, citizens, even stupid movies. That freedom of expression you seem not to care about allows people like you and half of Hollywood to condemn the CIA day in and day out without getting sent to Guantanimo. Talk about hypocrisy...
And if you want some chant about that, go make one up. I would probably even join you, if you weren't being such a pompous, self-righteous douchebag. So you'd do well to go take your own advice.

Barbaric? please, we killed 3.3 million over lies, i happen to care about that, yet all u 'Charlie' people dont seem to care about that in 14 years
but now its a few western people & we display this false outrage & media frenzy, vomiting the same chant
without even thinking for ourselves or any critisizm or selfreflection about our own western world, which is the root of this evil, talk about hypocrisy
killing in the name of God or Democracy no difference, exept that Democracy is way more deadly, now THATS selfrightious
CIA critisized? not even close, we only act like we do, if we did they would be gone decades ago
2days of false media outrage about Gitty as if we didnt know, so we dont have to focus on their realy dirty bizz
im all for freedom freedom of expression including ridicule & critisize our own dirty hypocrite world,
yet we conveinently forget & all avoid to do that when its most needed

Thank you very much for this homage to our victims.
Freedom of expression is a right and now it becomes
our only weapon against the hate and the terror, we
want to live without fear in peace with every people,
religious or atheists it doesn't matter because the main
message of humanity is peace and understanding between
all humans. We are all differents but we all can be united.
Thanks for your words and the way you've explained the situation
that we're living now. Greetings from France.
Je suis Charlie.

Our hearts go out to the families and to France. It would be poetic justice if in the end, the push against terrorism took a turn for the better and forced everyone to closely examine the situation, and forced terrorists to fear their own failure, because a handful of cartoonists made a brave stand.
Vive la liberté, mon ami!

I hope it will reinforce our humanity in this selfish world
we're living in. Because we need to spread love, light and
liberty all around the world !

Good words!
This informations, that the danger from other "harmless" sides, like smoking, drinking..., is much higher than dying because of an terrorist attack, should also be mentioned from time to time, in the media.
It isn't good, when people live in fear constantly.
Thanks for the reference

Definitely. The media is only interested in sensationalizing the stories to get viewers. They magnify how terrible the event is, without giving it proper context. We need to have serious long-term discussions about terrorism, not entertain short-term shock value of single events.
And you're welcome!

The only effect this should have is the increase in the number of comics, articles, and other works of satire and to expand them to cover as many organizations, religions, etc that require it. If nothing else, piss off the tossers even more. They think that if they attack schools it will stop people from learning, and attacking newspapers it will stop them being critic and poked fun at; well fuck the obnoxious fuckers and do it even more.

Yeah, that's why I applauded when Charlie decided to not only publish the next edition, but publish a million extra copies. These lunatics accomplished nothing but pointless bloodshed. Terrorists need to know that their efforts are counterproductive, and we need to teach them that lesson.
