I bet that it started when thieves made off with all the original gold & silver decorations. The exasperated priests decided to use materials that no sane thief would want, to create beautiful decorations. Out of hideous BONES they made all sorts of decorations.

That could have been a great approach to any church... using bones instead of gold.. hehehe, more cost effective and of course more space on their graveyard for sure. Hehehehe... but no, aparently the basement was build with the only purpose of making room for new bodies in the graveyard... as a consequence of too many deaths in a short span of time... Someone with money though apparently commissioned someone to do something a bit more "artistic" with the layout of the bones hehee ;D

Due to strict space, the  monastery at Mt.Sinai moves older burials to a boneroom, where the bones, sorted into neat stacks, reside. The room is guarded by a mummy or skeleton in robes, on a high shelf. The remains are of a monk who wished to guard the monastery forever. The place is off limits to females, even animals. The Virgin is jealous .
