Description Taken at Christchurch Harbour.
This was one of a pair of Kestrels that were taking turns hovering for unfortunate prey.

That's an awesome example of the low-speed characteristics of a kestrel. Spread tail for fine stability control and the alula on each wing stopping flow seperation, combined with the perfect coordination typical of any bird. Excellent capture..

It was less than thirty feet from me just hovering there facing downhill on the updraft.
I would have preferred to capture it from the front but I would have needed ropes and the prickly plants would have hurt my bare legs!
