Must have missed this when you originally posted Jai, it's great! Thank Will, I spotted it on his Journal.

Hmm... 400mm f3.5... have you got the 400 2.8??

rented one from Fixation for a weekend of fun, and also to decide if it's feasible to use in the field, as I was thinking of getting one.
Having used it I've decided it's very un-maneuverable compared to my 300 2.8 with a 1.4x TC attached.
Good ol' Will.

Never had the opportunity to try one myself but I've heard it's very big and very heavy which always puts me off. I don't mind using a tripod if needed but I wouldn't want a lens where it was a necessity. Did you try handholding it at all, or is that just not an option?

Can't beat the 300 2.8!

You have to know where and when you want to point it in advance due to it being Canons heaviest lens and momentum carries it on when handholding.
The balance point on our 300 2.8s is just where it's needed (the focus ring) on the 400 2.8 it's well behind that point.
I recommend trying before buying! You'd need at least a monopod for a days shooting.
After using it, I'd recommend to anyone to get the 300 2.8 with a 1.4x converter as it is HALF the weight and price!

Cheers for the info Jai. I can't see me ever getting anything bigger (or more expensive!) than the 500 f4. I like the idea of renting a lens and trying it out before committing to buying it though.
