Description Peck trotted alongside Liza as they walked through the Lost Temple of Zios. Liza shuffled with her fingers clasped together while Peck skipped beside her impatiently. “What is it, Liza?” Peck muttered, exasperated. “Are you here to apologise to me on behalf of Greely?”
Liza stopped in front of the old Zios statue. She sat down in front of it, patting her paw on the mossy ground beside her, motioning for Peck to sit. She sat down beside Liza, tapping her foot anxiously. “Well? Why did you take me here?”
Liza sighed. She looked towards Peck solemnly. “I took you aside not just to apologize on Greely’s behalf but to also explain to you the reason behind his erratic and moody behavior.”
Peck groaned dramatically. “Well? What’s his deal?”
“There’s a lot more to Greely than meets the eye,” Liza informed her calmly. “The reason he’s been so harsh towards you lately is that he feels you’re not taking the situation with the phantoms seriously.”
“Yes I am!” Peck exclaimed. “I’m working my hardest to provide a place where my rabbits can live peacefully without fear. Just because I have different methods of working to thwart the phantoms’ plans doesn’t mean I’m not ‘taking it seriously.’”
Liza sighed. “All of us Alphas have had our own personal grudges against the phantoms. You’ve lost friends and family to the phantoms, and so has he. But there’s more to the story than just that.”
Peck raised her eyebrows. Not in a suspicious or questioning way, but in more of a lamenting and somber way. She remembered it clearly; phantoms had attacked her village and lives were lost. Those who didn’t die in the attack got lost in the forest and starved. Peck’s little brother was one of the casualties in that tragic event.
“Even so,” Peck murmured, “Greely has no excuse for the way he’s been acting. He has no right to yell at people and snap at people for doing nothing.”
“It may be true that Greely’s harsh behavior towards you is unacceptable, but it comes from his own experiences. You’ve expressed to me that the biggest reason that you’re so optimistic is because back when you were at your lowest you needed someone cheerful and happy to help you through your own troubles, and want to make sure nobody goes through that alone. Greely has a different story; he’s bitter at the phantoms because they took away the person he cared about the most.”
Peck’s angry expression softened. She remembered back when her village had been attacked; the phantoms ruthlessly flattened huts and dug up whole burrows. Peck watched as her friends and family members ran away, fearing for their lives. Peck watched in horror as her beloved little brother was killed in front of her by one of the phantoms’ machines. If anyone knew what it was like to lose a loved one, it was her.
“Greely grew up in a pack that used to wander around the Shiveer mountain range. His best friend growing up was another wolf in the pack, a beautiful white wolf named Moonbeam. The two were close growing up, and they would spend all of their time together. Over the years Greely gradually fell in love with her, and after several years she meant the world to him and he would do anything to make her happy. After they’d grown up, Moonbeam fell in love with a phantom. This was before the phantoms had begun their plans of world domination, back when they were a peaceful species that lived underground and were our trade partners. Greely was upset by this, but supported her because he cared more about her own happiness and well being than his own, and understood that with this kind phantom she would be happy. This phantom was one of the phantom princes, who was destined to become a king. This prince was impossibly curious, and decided to explore the overworld. In his absence the cruel phantom king, responsible for the deaths of all the animals lost in the war, assassinated the other good kings and banished the young prince. When the phantoms began their attack on Jamaa, Moonbeam and the phantom prince were both exiled from the pack. Greely tried to go after his beloved friend, but soon discovered that the phantoms had killed Moonbeam. Greely lost Moonbeam, his dear childhood friend and the love of his life, to the cruelty of the phantoms. You cope by being optimistic and happy Peck, but Greely copes by focusing all of his attention on getting revenge. He wants to kill the king who destroyed the peace and his good life. He wants to slaughter the phantom who took his beloved away from him forever. That is why he gets upset when you do anything other than consistently strive to exterminate all the evil phantoms from this  world.”
Peck could do nothing but stare at Liza. She had always thought Greely was just and edgy, moody and angry person. Well, okay, that much is true. But she had never expected his story to be that deep and sad.
“Greely is hard to deal with sometimes, but when you know what he’s been through and what motivates him he is much easier to understand,” Liza whispered solemnly.

Yeah, that was my goal in writing this. But I had plans for a happy ending.
