Description "Gargoyle" is a bit of a misnomer, as the term originally applied to an ornamental (and often quite ugly) spouting that had a throat which conveyed water. The original French - gargouille - means "throat" or "gullet"; while non-water-carrying sculpture would be referred to as a chimera or a grotesque.

I guess the naming convention stuck because of the popularity of (i think it was Disney) Gargoyles cartoon that aired somewhere in the 90ies. C'mon, Goliath was a hottie... admit it! [link] has informed me that in the 70ies D&D roleplay there was also a Gargoyle character. Or else, a broad brush was applied to these gothic-ish sculptures whose purpose was to ward off evil with their sheer ugliossity, labeling them all as gargoyles.

I really enjoy his unprettyness, hence this close-up. he haunts my modem, guarding me against loss of connectivity (we most fervently hope).
