Description Reblog on my Tumblr

I've seen a lot of eye tuts on dA...at least, what seems like tutorials, but a lot of them are simply either step-by-step or just a bunch of different styles of eyes in different angles. None of them really explain how the eyes look the way it does, why the eyelids casts that shadow on the eyeballs, etc. At least, none that I've seen

I hope this gives you guys a more in-depth look to the human eye and the structure surrounding it. This actually took quite a long time, so i hope you guys like it . Rendering the eyes took a LOT longer than simply sketching them D;.

If you have any more questions, feel free to ask .

here's the step-by-step put into gif so it's easier to see:

here are the skull studies I did back a few years ago:

My other tutorials:

My other works:

I put some anime eyes in the references too, hope you guys don't mind, hahaha.

ps. i put it in traditional art catagory because it's the only one with the subsection "anatomy" in it. I'm not sure why digital art can't teach anatomy either, but you'll have to ask dA about that. xD;;.

PPS: I did this in Painttool SAI

The reference eyes on the last row, far right, are similar to how the mermaids are in my original project. I've looked for tuts on those types of eyes and couldn't find anything. Am I missing it? Also, this tutorial is fantastic~ Thank you for taking the time to make this.

The references at the bottom blew my mind away!! I wish I could draw like that! Is it ever hard for you to make the eyes symmetrical? I have that problem all the time. D' :

Qinni In reply to this-is-a-paradox [2013-04-13 16:38:27 +0000 UTC]

thanks I've always found drawing symmetrical difficult; however, if you flip the drawing around every once in a while, it will help .

My problem with eyes is always with the 3/4 face with the 'squished eye' It never looks right. Do you have any suggestions or helpful hints dealing with that eye?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Qinni In reply to Shanyume [2013-03-21 13:54:45 +0000 UTC]

I think the easiest way, actually, is probably to reference some photos or artworks that you like for practice. as you copy it, you'll get the feel of how the artist deals with that eye. i think for every person, it's different, and....well, honestly I've never really had trouble with that eye so I can't really think of a specific way of making it easier to draw @__@;; I'm really sorry >_<;; this is the only thing I can suggest >_<;;. the more you practice, the better you'll get at that eye, that's for sure though .

Shanyume In reply to Qinni [2013-03-21 17:34:27 +0000 UTC]

No worries <3 I appreciate you taking the time to respond. I
don't know why that particular eye gives me so much grief. May
I have your permission to reference some of your art? Chances
are I won't be loading anything onto DA and if I do I'd give
credit. I've set aside 3 hours this evening to work on drawing
eyes. At home I actually have tabs pulled up for tonight, the tutorial
you put together as well as some of Ryky,s eyes, mirukawa, and
one other. To be honest I'm tired of drawing the stereotypical
anime and really want to work on moving past that. At least that's
my 2013 goal.

Qinni In reply to Shanyume [2013-03-22 00:38:39 +0000 UTC]

Go ahead xD. I'd also suggest try to reference photographs, if you're trying to move away from anime. It'll take you to a more semi-realistic place, I think, if that's were you want to go.

Shanyume In reply to Qinni [2013-03-22 04:24:06 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! I appreciate it <3 I haven't done many searches
for faces and expressions I should probably try to fine some.
There is a girl on DA who has dark hair that had some really good
face / expression stocks but I can't remember who she was I think
her name started with a K x.x But Jennifer Healy had provided
me two great resources one for color schemes and the other
is for gesture practice I've had fun with both of them .

What exactly do you mean when you say "render"?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Qinni In reply to artofpan [2013-03-07 23:27:10 +0000 UTC]

hm...i guess i meant make-it-more-into-a-3d-structure kind of thing.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

artofpan In reply to Qinni [2013-03-07 23:31:24 +0000 UTC]

Right. How do you go about doing that? I mean, I get the whole shading thing, but how do you make it look so neat?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Qinni In reply to artofpan [2013-03-07 23:47:53 +0000 UTC]

I'm not really sure what you mean by "neat", but to go about rendering properly, it's really a lot about understanding the structure of the thing you're trying to render, as well as how the lighting works.

artofpan In reply to Qinni [2013-03-08 05:19:07 +0000 UTC]

I meant more like, not sketchy at all. Sorry for being so vague, I just don't know how else to explain it. And also, thanks for your help and patience

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Qinni In reply to artofpan [2013-03-09 02:53:09 +0000 UTC]

I'm not really sure what you mean; do you mean how to get it smoothly rounded and stuff? cause that depends on the program/tool (if you're traditional artist: medium) you're using.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

artofpan In reply to Qinni [2013-03-09 03:47:16 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, sorry again. What program or tool do you use?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Qinni In reply to artofpan [2013-03-09 04:39:43 +0000 UTC]

I personally use painttool SAI, and I use the water-brush to make things smooth. (and don't be sorry xD)

Nice work, very helpful and well drawn. Could you tell me what brush settings you used in sai please? Always interested to learn others settings because i find sai's brushes very soft and hard to control. Also wondering if you'd consider doing a perspective tutorial on things like turning a cylinder in space or drawing a head looking up and down and how perspective affects it. Cheers .
