No. 387: The birth of Hekatonkheires.

Death Valley was such an otherworldly experience.

I knew I had to do something.

So I grabbed a brown cloth we had with us, and embarked on a hike in the lowest point of the US: no plan, just pure creation.

I originally wanted to do a floating spectre of sorts...but nature had other plans with such huge gusts of wind. It forced me to go from a normalized concept to something much more original and organic

Looking for inspiration while stitching together the images, I remembered a creature taught in Greco-Roman Art History. The Hekatonkheires were born from Gaia (Earth) and Ouranos (sky) and were hundred handed and fifty headed giants; three in total. They could control the wind, which ironically made this image possible. The cloth allowed for easy transition from photo to photo, and I wanted to convey the anguish and rage felt by Gaia through her sons. What would their birth look like through a desolate place such as death valley? The difficulty was how many possibilities this image could have ended up as, and trust me I had multiple completed versions 😮‍💨. But I felt this one spoke the most of the trinity, and of their emotions.

"For of all the children that were born of Gaia and Ouranos, these were the most terrible, and they were hated by their own father from the first. And he used to hide them all away in a secret place of Gaia (Earth) so soon as each was born, and would not suffer them to come up into the light: and Ouranos rejoiced in his evil doing".
