Lune - Mallory
"...Thou talk'st of nothing.
-True, I talk of dreams,
Which are the children of an idle brain,
Begot of nothing but vain fantasy."
The little dog had ignored Juliette at first, seemingly more preoccupied in trying to search for something. Juliette was too frazzled to care about being denied the animal's affections, but then the dog started whining and moping through the night. She no longer hid under the bed so much as sulked, nosing at a tape of uncut red ribbon. Juliette had no strong feelings for animals - Roman would have never allowed one in his pristine home - but seeing the poor thing become so depressed...She wasn't even eating the food Juliette had felt obligated to continue putting out. It was too much.
The salazzle lowered herself onto her knees and pulled up the bed sheet. The growlithe was still there, looking as pitiful as ever. "Come on, then." Juliette stuck a hand towards her. "Come on out." Her big brown eyes glanced up at Juliette, but the dog only huffed forlornly before returning to the red ribbon. "Aren't you hungry?" Juliette pulled away to grab the one full bowl by the wall ('At least the cat isn't starving herself too,' Juliette thought) and slid it just beneath the bed. She clicked her tongue and tapped the bowl. "Come on out," she cooed, but the dog ignored her still.
Juliette sighed. It wasn't her fault if the dog didn't eat, the dog wasn't even hers! She and the cat must belong to whoever occupied the empty bunk. If anyone did. That was another mystery Juliette just didn't have time for. And yet, the woman couldn't turn away from this one. The growlithe was soon replaced with a much tinier, more emaciated vision in Juliette's mind. The familiar image struck something within her. Where did it come from? Where had she seen it before? And why did it tell her she should be looking elsewhere if she wanted the dog's attention?
Juliette sat up and turned to one of the desks on the opposite side of the room. Without thinking too much about it, she stood and moved to pull open the middle drawer. It let out an unavoidable scraping sound and she paused. But it was followed by a shuffling noise behind her. She looked back and saw the dog's head peeking out from under the bed. Was she on the right track? She pulled the drawer the rest of the way open to reveal a large paper bag. "What's this?" Lifting the bag out of the drawer finally brought the growlithe out entirely. She trotted over to the desk and Juliette's side, eyes glued to the bag. Juliette lifted it higher, to one side and then to the other. The dog's head followed the movements exactly. Curiosity finally overcame Juliette and she opened the bag. Inside were a multitude of small pink blocks, some bigger than others with darker chunks inside. Taking one out earned an immediate bark from the dog.
"Did I find your favored treats?" The dog barked again and spun around in a circle. Juliette sat down in the nearby chair and placed the bag atop the desk, where the dog couldn't reach. "Sit," she ordered clearly. The dog understood and immediately sat herself down in front of Juliette. But before she could be praised, she launched herself up at Juliette's knees and scrambled up onto her lap. "Excuse me, that's no-" But the dog had sat back on her hind paws again, pawing at Juliette while her tail wagged back and forth at surprising speeds. "Hmm, so now you adore me?" The dog barked. They do say the way to someone's heart is through their stomach. And, to be fair, she did sit as commanded.
Juliette held the pink block where the dog was able to reach. "Good girl...Stripes." 'Stripes? Where did that come from?' The dog yipped and grew excited. Juliette immediately scoffed. "No, that cannot be your name." But Stripes just barked again. "Now I'm certain you can't be mine. I would have given you a proper name. Like Lady or Duchess or--" Stripes scrunched her face and bared her teeth at the names, and Juliette thought she'd somehow taken personal offense. But then the little dog gave a loud sneeze, powerful enough to almost knock her back off of Juliette's lap. Her smile then returned and she scrambled back to her original spot, yipping for another treat. Perhaps, if no better owner appeared before she left the strange circus, she could try to take the dog with her. Roman would protest and berate her for getting attached to a useless animal, in the best case scenario. 'Let the ugly bastard roar,' she thought. Instead of scolding herself for such an impolite thought, Juliette just chuckled and placed one hand on the fur between Stripes's ears. The other went back into the bag of treats.
"Perhaps something simple like Stripes works just fine."
