Description

how my esk clover came to be (not an origin prompt)

The wind howled as a lone mother wolf pushed through the snow, behind her a small pup, who could only be a few weeks old. While the pup had the illusion of fullness, sharp ribs were hidden behind soft downy fur, and the mother was in even worse shape, shaking on her paws as they searched for shelter. The mother wolf eventually resorted to digging into the snow, until a dip big enough for the both of them was formed. She used her body to shelter the poor pup, who whined at the absence of milk and warmth. With a comforting lick the wolf hummed to her young one, making sweet promises of hearty milk and sunshine before drifting to sleep.

When the pup woke up she saw her mother shakily walking away, and hurried over to stop her,

“Mama! Where are you going??”

The mother wolf looked at her solemnly, despite everything the pup had so much optimism and joy, it gave her hope that she would make it through these trying times as she nudged her pup back into the makeshift den,

“Mother will be back with food, be a good pup and stay here”

The pup whined, and begged for her mother, her whole world, to stay but reluctantly agreed to stay, watching her go off into the icy nothing.

After around an hour of waiting the pup grew bored, and left the den to find fun. It didn't occur to her how far she wandered, as she found a barren bush to bat at, and snowbirds to chase. She was carefree, but a weariness began to eat at her, making her movements slower, less coordinated, until she eventually had to lay down. The pup whined and howled, expecting her mother to run up and feed her, but the only answer she received was the rustling of the tree tops.

She shivered as snow began to fall, covering her soft fur. The weariness grew, until it was hard to open her eyes, and slowly let them close. Perhaps she would take a nap and wait for mother..

The pup suddenly felt a new burst of energy, and opened her eyes to see what looked like the flat face of an owl. She jumped up and back, frightened by the new creature, only to stumble and fall, her legs feeling long and clumsy. She could hear roaring laughter in her head as the creature shook and skittered about, all while she looked at it wide eyed. The entire creature was slinky, and loose, with long fur and a shadowy aura, plant matter clinging to it's back as it's long fingers carried it on short legs, she jumped again as a voice rang in her mind,

"Oh bother, you came out boring, I thought wolves were ferocious"

The pup tilted her head, she was confused. Why wasn't she tired anymore, why did she feel bigger, and who was this...thing. She moved back as the creature got close again,

"I am Ikkit. You are clover, because I say so. I rule this biome and you are but a toy."

She felt even more confused, she already had a name, the small bark her mother always expected her to come to.

Before she could even ask one question, the creature was gone. It didn't climb a tree or run away, it was just gone.
