I suspect her name is derived from Stheno who is one of Medusa's sisters, and also had snake hair..

actually ctenophorae is derived from the scientific term ctenophora, which is a prehistoric species of comb jellyfish with very thick tentacles (compared to the tentacles of today's jellyfish.) and a very thick, gelatinous body structure.
