I know you mentioned this was taken with a bad camera, so I'm not sure if it has a manual mode or not but the 1 second shutter speed seems far, far too long for this type of capture. The long shutter speed combined with the large aperture gives you no depth of field which is why the image seems so out-of-focus. A sharpening filter will only do so much.
The black border was a good choice. It gives a needed weight to the image.
Have you tried converting this to black and white?...(I'm kidding)

It isn't a manual, unfortunately. Thank you for the advice, though! When I finally get a good camera, I plan on retaking this!
